I started doing simulation with a custom program to estimate the temperature in telephone enclosures using passive cooling in the late 1980s. After that started using DOE-2.1 for doing parametric analysis as well as a user interface (BCHP Screening Tool). When EnergyPlus was still in beta, wrote EP-Launch and IDF Editor and have since written some of the other utilities as well as the tabular reporting, utility rate, and life-cycle costing portions of EnergyPlus. I recently finished an ASHRAE project using EnergyPlus to estimate the usage of future ultra-low energy use buildings. I also started the BLDG-SIM mailing list in 1999 and manage the mailing lists at onebuilding.org. You may see me at ASHRAE meetings since I chair both the 90.1 Energy Cost Budget subcommittee which is responsible for Appendix G as well as a standard completed in 2018 called SPC 209 Energy Simulation Aided Design for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.
