2016-09-07 09:04:44 -0500 asked a question Can I create a HVAC template in Openstudio?

I wonder if I can create customized HVAC template in addition to the basic ones that are provided in OS, without using measures (Forgive my laziness to learn ruby...) I know DesignBuilder offer this option, but wonder if OS does too. Thanks

Thanks for the help. That saves lots of my time

2016-01-06 11:28:15 -0500 asked a question Automatically apply zone equipment to all select zones in OpenStudio

In OpenStudio, I wonder if I can quickly assign the same type of zone equipment to all selected zones in the thermal zone tab. Right now even if I select all the zones and drag the zone equipment, only one zone will be attached with that equipment.

Thanks,

2016-01-06 08:39:44 -0500 asked a question OpenStudio 1.10 plugin not showing in Sketchup 2016

I used OS 1.09 32 bit w/ Sketchup 2015 Make previously. Then I uninstalled them and installed OS 1.10 and Sketchup 2016 Make both in 64bit. However, when I open stetchup, it will only show Welcome to OpenStudio Sketchup Plug-in... window and when I click either Yes, No or Cancel, the window disappear but the OS plugin is not showing. I tried to reinstall OS or Sketchup and restart and non worked...

2015-12-03 13:39:59 -0500 asked a question openstudio 1.9 wont work with Sketchup Make 2016?

I couldn't find Sktechup Make 2015 so I downloaded 2016, but openstudio cant detect it and it wont install the plugin for SU. I wonder if there is a way to manually locate SU for OS? Thanks

2015-10-16 15:41:35 -0500 asked a question Something like record macro in Openstudio?

It will be really helpful to add "record macro" like the one in Excel to Opensudio so people like me who doesn't know too much about ruby can take advantage of the automation. I don't know if this is the right place to post request like this but would give it a try.

2015-08-12 14:41:53 -0500 commented answer How to use constant supply air temperature in CAV in E+

Yes. If I set the minimum and maximum to different values, it will work. But the problem is the air temperature is not fixed at a constant for cooling or heating. This can also be achieved by a SPM:SingleZone:Reheat. So I don't really understand why E+ have the SPM:SZ:Heating and SPM:SZ:Cooling since they don't function as they intended to be. Or its just I didn't set them up right....

2015-08-12 13:15:13 -0500 commented answer How to use constant supply air temperature in CAV in E+

Thanks for your detailed explanation. I read the E+ help, it says single zone heating setpoint manager will maintain the temperature when the controlled zone needs heating. And the same with cooling setpoint manager. But it seems they don't work as designed. I am hoping the program can automatically determine whether heating or cooling is needed and use the corresponding temp. I think this should be a very simple if then statement and just curious why E+ didn't implement it as it is the most common type of CAV system.

2015-08-12 11:54:02 -0500 asked a question How to use constant supply air temperature in CAV in E+

I would like to model a single zone CAV system with constant SA temp. It will cycle on and off to meet the load. I tried with adding single zone heating setpoint manager (min=max=95F) after Heating Coil and single zone cooling setpoint manager (min=max=55F) after Cooling coil. However, when I looked at the node temperature, it seems like the heating coil tries to heat the air to 95F first and then the cooling coil tries to cool it down to 55F afterwards. So both coils are working simultaneously and it always supply 55F to the room even though the room needs heating.

This is how my system set up

OA mixed with return air->Fan->HC->CC->Room

Also, how do I make the fan cycle on and off in a CAV system, does it do that automatically when no ventilation is required?

Thanks in advance

2015-08-11 15:16:20 -0500 commented answer Sizing chilled beam w/ DOAS in E+ and Openstudio

Thanks that cleared my confusion. So if I put 50F or 60F, what will be the difference? I think it will only change the design cfm but since the air system is sized by ventilation requirement, the cfm should always be the same. So it is really weird to me how E+ will size DOAS with a radiant system correctly.

I always have trouble understanding the Zone Cooling Design Supply Air Temp in the sizing tab. Is that the supply air temperature of the DOAS system (which is usually supplied at 70F or room neutral level) or it is 55 F? I always get an error if I set it to 70 F. This question applies to other DOAS coupled with non-air system which makes the supply air temperature higher than the typical 55 F. Thanks in advance,

HJ

2015-03-23 07:59:12 -0500 commented answer heat recovery chiller in E+

Thanks Chandan. I wonder if I could do it openstudio or designbuilder. I read the file you mentioned. It seems like there is a direct input for heat recovery loop under Chiller:EIR. But I didnt find those inputs in OS or DB... If I can do it in GUI that would be much better

2015-03-20 13:27:11 -0500 asked a question VAV: Fan powered box or no fan duct

The fan powered box has advantage to reduce reheat energy but added more fan energy, especially series fan powered box. From simulation, I often see negative effect using fan powered box compared to single ducted box with reheat.

I wonder if anyone has different results/opinion on this. I really dont see the real advantage of fan powered box.

Thanks!

2015-03-20 09:41:51 -0500 asked a question heat recovery chiller in E+

Is there a example of how to model heat recovery chiller in E+?

I created a model but it seems the heat exchanger always reduce the hot water temperature thus actually largely increase the heating energy.

The basic scheme is like this: Chiller provides cooling for interior zones in winter, Chiller Condensing Water (CW) run thru HX HX connected in HW loop before boiler to pre heat HW for zone heating or reheat.

But problem I see is that the CW temperature is always lower than HW return temperature thus I am using HW to heat up CW. I dont know if there is a right way of doing it. Thanks

2015-03-18 13:28:19 -0500 answered a question Using OpenStudio for LEED certification

It has all the component. Just not very efficient unless you write your own ruby code

2015-03-18 13:18:17 -0500 answered a question Is there a way to convert IDF to XML or vice versa?

Openstudio can convert idf to gbXML. There are quite a lot of XML so I dont know which one you want. But gbXML is the most common one for building model

2015-03-18 13:13:40 -0500 asked a question What GUI to use for E+

Whats your thought on whats the most efficient GUI for E+, esp for LEED modeling. I found designbuildign and OS has their own advantages but sometimes their limitation will make me go back to the old Trace, which is extremely efficient in setting LEED baseline and generating nice report. DB for example, is unable to model heat recovery chiller. OS on the other hand, is slow because most of the inputs are done by drag and drop. And both GUI has limitations that eventually you need to use E+. But its hard to go back to GUI if you want to change the geometry or HVAC.

2015-03-18 13:05:27 -0500 answered a question trace humidification energy report

I found a way of doing it. Just add another plant using a differnt source of enegy then it will be reported in ECB and LEED report. Though some explannation is needed to clarify to the reviewer. Also, assigning the humidification coil to a different plant will give you option to find the energy use in Equipment Energy Cosumption Report. Though they are not directly reported in LEED summary or ECB report.

Is there a better way to add multiple zones to the airloop in OS 1.6? Also, is there a faster way to set below grade zones wall outside boundary to ground?

Hi i wonder if anyone here uses Trace 700 for LEED modeling. One problem we have is how to let it separate the humidification energy from space heating in LEED report. Is there a good way of doing it? Thanks
