2015-03-17 06:19:53 -0500 asked a question Load Profile of Call Centers

I am modeling a new call center building and looking for appropriate schedules for occupancy, lighting, and equipment loads. Since this is 24/7 operation, I cannot use the schedules for office spaces provided in OpenStudio or EnergyPlus. My question is if there are published information related to call center schedules which is acceptable to LEED reviewer. I've been searching the internet but can't find any. Thanks in advance for any information, suggestions, or advice.

2015-02-24 03:26:11 -0500 answered a question VRF system - Error

I did a quick 5-zone model (1 core and 4 perimeters) with 189.1 office wholebuilding spaces, schedule set, and construction set. I assigned a VRF system and one terminal for each zone, and assigned different thermostat cooling setpoint for each zone following the description of your model as I understand it. The rest of the default values were not changed. The model ran to completion with 0 error and 23 warnings. I am using OS 1.6.1.

The error message "No Sizing:Zone objects were entered" suggests the source of the problem since the succeeding calculations use the zone sizing calculation results. Perhaps checking the sizing parameters in the thermal zone tab could show where the problem is. Another suggestion is to build and run your model using the default values of OS similar to what I did. If successful, then replace the specific parameters with that of the building being modeled. Hope this helps.

You can create a shortcut for the EnergyPlus 8.2 that comes with OS and launch it independently without going to the EP Launch inside the OS program file folder. This way, the standalone EPlus installation is no longer needed.

2015-02-19 21:26:22 -0500 commented question Primary/Secondary Loop

I posted this topic earlier which was responded to by @aparker (thanks). I tried the procedure suggested in the reply and it's working. The Plant Application Guide in the EnergyPlus documentation describes how the fluid to fluid heat exchanger is used instead of the commonpipe object to model primary/secondary loop.

2015-02-03 00:35:33 -0500 asked a question Modeling Primary-Secondary Chilled Water Pumps in OpenStudio

I am modeling an all variable speed chiller plant in OpenStudio. The chilled water pumps are designed in a primary-secondary configuration with the pumps connected to their respective headers. This arrangement can be implemented in EnergyPlus but I want to do this in OpenStudio 1.6.

However, the common pipe (for primary-secondary configuration) and headered pump objects are not yet supported in OpenStudio as far as I know, but I understand this can be done using measures. Has anyone encountered this situation?

Any guidance is highly appreciated particularly in writing the measures to access the cited EnergyPlus objects from OpenStudio.

2015-01-26 20:39:06 -0500 asked a question Error Opening EnergyPlus After Installing OpenStudio 1.6

I tried the recently released OpenStudio 1.6 and found that I could not open EnergyPlus using EP Launch from a separately installed copy or from the one built-in with OpenStudio 1.6. I am getting the following error message:

"Component 'MSINET.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."

I need the standalone EnergyPlus to work on some models. Any suggestion on how to make the EP Launch work?

2015-01-25 19:36:59 -0500 asked a question Appendix G Pumps Input Power

I am modeling a high rise 48 story building consisting of retail spaces for the first 6 levels and office spaces on top. The retail spaces are cooled by 3 chillers and 3 cooling towers located on the 6th level.

The office spaces are cooled separately by 5 water cooled chillers with primary-secondary distribution configuration. These chillers are located on the 7th level which houses other mechanical equipment while the 5 cooling towers are located on the roof deck of 48th floor. Chilled water distribution is constant primary-variable secondary configuration. The office floor levels (4m floor to floor height) are divided into low zone, mid zone, and high zone with each zone served by secondary chilled water pumps sized accordingly to meet the head required. The project is registered for LEED certification.

My question is regarding the Appendix G pump input power of 22 W/gpm and 19 W/gpm for the chilled water pumps and condenser water pumps, respectively. The designed capacities of the pumps for the office cooling system are double these limits and therefore negatively affecting the energy performance of the project. Has anyone encountered this situation? Is there any allowed adjustment to the Appendix G limits to account for the high head of the cooling system? Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

2014-12-04 06:49:57 -0500 asked a question Vegetated Roof in OS 1.5.2

This pertains to creating an OS construction. I am trying to use the vegetated roof material to model a landscaped rooftop. I can create the material but when applied to the construction layer, it won't stick to the vertical layer bar. Any suggestion to make it stick?

2014-11-22 01:02:30 -0500 asked a question Basement Parking with Conditioned Core Spaces

I am modeling a building with basement or below grade parking garage. In the core or middle of the parking area are conditioned spaces cooled by FCUs. Ventilation air to the basement is provided by fresh air supply fans and exhausted by fans. Jet fans provide air circulation directed towards the exhaust. Conditioned spaces draw supply air from outside the room thru inlet air louvers and cooled by the FCUs. CO sensors are provided to check the level of CO in the parking area. To model this in OS 1.5.2, I used an airloop with outdoor air system, supply fan, setpoint manager (follow outdoor air temperature), uncontrolled air terminal to introduce unconditioned air to the conditioned space/zone. With this set up, I am getting warnings shown below:

* Warning * GetAirPathData: AirLoopHVAC="FRESH AIR SUPPLY" has no Controllers.

My question is if my set up is correct and if yes, how to address the warning because I can't locate the controllers mentioned, or if it can be ignored. Thanks in advance.

2014-11-21 09:32:21 -0500 commented answer Open Studio 1.5 - Zone has no surfaces

I would like to share that I'm getting the same error from OS 1.5.2/SU 2014 despite assigning a thermal zone to a space to clear the red "Unassigned Thermal Zone" as shown by David. Also, when I checked in SU inspector, the no. of spaces is more than the thermal zones indicating unassigned spaces. I used the measure available in SU to create and assign thermal zones to spaces without thermal zones but nothing happens. The error keeps on appearing despite manually creating a thermal zone and assigning a space to it. I re-installed OS but the error still appears.
