EnergyPlus IDF Version Updater Error

asked 2016-05-05 14:41:57 -0600

updated 2016-05-05 14:42:39 -0600

I seems to be getting two errors with the version updater, going from v8.1 to 8.3 OR to v8.5.

  1. When launching from EPLaunch I'll get errors with the "No Appropriate TransitionV-X-X-to-x-x.exe' files found..." A separate install on a different machine was able to complete the process, but was curious what I'd done to cause this error.

  2. Bigger issue with when I did run the updater, I was then unable to run the file. This is true for both the v8.3 and v8.5. I traced the issue back to: " * Severe * IP: IDF line~416507 Invalid Number in Numeric Field#12 (Cooling Supply Air Flow Rate Per Floor Area), value=DESIGNDAY, in SIZING:SYSTEM=AHU 1-01" Looking a the IDD, I was able to figure it out, and remove the issue [find and replace via Notepad++]. A second time I was confront with the same error, but in another field location. but was curious if I was the only one. It did ppear to be uniform error for all of the SIZING:SYSTEM (s), but odd. Thoughts? Or is this a bug due to some of the change in the IDD for these?

It sounds to me as if you are trying to skip a version, as updating V8.1 directly to V8.3. Depending on the input file, this can trip the errors you describe. When you need to update and input file from a previous version, use the transition program distributed with the software (EP Launch transition under the File menu). When skipping a version, use the multiple version updater here.

Not really skip per se; I used the Version Updater via EPLaunch. It automatically ran through the steps of v8.2 then to v8.3 [and on up for the v8.5 test]. That's why I asked & was confused. I did not convert it from v8.1 v8.2 then v8.2 to v8.3....I just selected v8.1 and v8.3 from the Version Converter dropdowns.

With the link you sent, does this mean that we/I should use it and not the item from EPLaunch or if it a parallel equal?

For item 1, it sounds like the transition exe files were not present in the \Preprocess\IDFVersionUpdater folder. Compare the contents of this folder on the machine that failed with the one that completed successfully. Beginning with v8.4.0, all of the required transition files back to v7.2.0 are included with the EnergyPlus installer. But prior to that only the latest transition was included, and the older ones had to be downloaded from the helpdesk

For item 2, it sounds like the original file was not the version it claimed to be. Please post a link to the file here or send it to the helpdesk at energyplus-support@gard.com so we can try to reproduce the problem.

MJWitte, Sorry, for the delay. I will email the files and we can work from there.

The issue you describe is probably related to the issue here and is being fixed here. If it is not related, please add information to the issue on GitHub.Hopefully it will be fixed in the next release of EnergyPlus.

I think it may possibly be related to the open ended part of the array...but I am not 100% confident. It did include issues with the data translated into specific field locations as part of the translation. I have sent the file, as it may be a quick 'yes, that is the same' or 'uhm....that's no good'. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

dradair, I would encourage you to try using the files from the helpdesk, when I was testing how to fix this issue, they did not show the same problem.
