Is there a follow-up on this one? I'm implementing nigh ventilation in EnergyPlus and I'm not sure it's working either.

2016-02-15 09:35:11 -0500 commented answer Getting csv from sql

@Lincoln, I have R3.2.1 version installed, when I ran devtools::install_github('ropensci/plotly'), it kept on saying the ERROR: dependency 'digest' is not available for package 'plotly'. Also when I ran the runApp(appDir =getwd()) command, the GUI interface shows up, and I can select the eplusout.sql file, but it's not uploading, nor it's executing anything. Just curious, what's the R version you have installed that would work with this app?

2016-01-28 16:19:18 -0500 asked a question Problem adding dualductVAV terminal to zones using ruby script

I am creating a script for adding AirTerminalDualDuctVAV terminal to zones. The command to add that is airloop.addBranchForZone(zone,dualductVAV.to_StraightComponent). It went thru all fine, except I realized later the AirTerminalDualDuctVAV object is a mixer object. Although this rubyscript went through, it was not successfully adding the dualduct terminal to the zone. Additionally, there is a public member function of setDesignSpecificationOutdoorAirObject(). It seems to me that without calling this method, adding the dualductVAV terminal just erased the existing DesignSpecificationOutdoorAirObject for the zone. This is becoming very cumbersome.

Hi @macumber, yeah, I used the unhandled swap entities. I tried again this morning, it generated one problematic surface. So it's working. Sorry for the confusion. Still very useful!

Thanks @lisang! I just downloaded the BCL script, but it didn't get applied successfully, mainly the coefficients on A, B, D didn't get applied, and defaulted to OpenStudio default.......maybe the building height etc. didn't get registered? It's a bit odd....

2015-12-07 10:04:40 -0500 asked a question Four pipe induction fan coil units issues

Hi all, I am having two problems with four pipe induction FCUs. The first one is with dangling exhaust nodes, it doesn't seem I can get rid of it. I used a script to apply induction FCUs to the select zones with minimal tweaking in the model afterwards. There was a posting on this June with OS version 1.7, but doesn't look like it's solved. I can export the E+ idf file out and fix it in idf, but I won't be able to import this back to openstudio to meet the reporting requirements.

Second, these four pipe FCUs (>40 of them in the model), when one fails to have design capacity meets load, EnergyPlus stops and produces error for this particular FCU. In my case, I have 10 FCUs that were having troubles, I had to run E+ 10 times to go thru all the FCUs. Is there a fast way to fix it?

Thanks!

@Kyle Benne, I am having exactly the same problem with daggling exhaust nodes, this is before I split up the DOAS systems. I created a script to assign 4-pipe induction FCUs to thermal zones.... is there a quick way to fix this in OS? Thanks!

2015-03-13 16:02:07 -0500 asked a question Quantifying multifamily infiltration savings in EneryPlus

We are trying to quantify energy cost savings with air sealing measures (7ACH down to 5ACH per unit, for now assuming all leakage to the outside) in a mid rise multifamily building using a whole building modeling approach. For the zoneinfiltration:DesignFlowRate object in EnergyPlus, the EnergyPlus IO manual lists I_design for two scenarios: 1. 7.5mph value and using Blast coefficients and 2. 10mph value and using DOE2 coefficients.

According to an earlier post on Getting Infiltration Correct, I presumed I_design is design value at 4pa rather than at 7.5 or 10mph wind speed. And I used the DOE2 coefficients 0.224 on wind speed difference, my predicted savings level is 4-5 times more savings on a per unit basis than savings level predicted by BEopt or Remrate. Is there any recommendations to align the savings number? Are there better coefficients to use for multifamily buildings as well, similar to @lisang 's publications?

I tried to use the DOE2 coefficients 0.224 on wind speed difference, and use Idesign at ACH at 4pa values, my results are 4 times more savings on a per unit level than using BEopt or Remrate results savings level. Is there any recommendations? @lisang?

2014-12-01 11:04:18 -0500 asked a question Geometry diagnostic steps in OpenStudio Sketchup mode

When we generate a geometry in OpenStudio Sketchup mode, for someone not so experienced, it's common to see the geometry generated, surface matching working fine, and we save and close the file thinking it's all good to go. And then we reopen the Sketchup .osm file, only to find the model file is open in all wire frame mode with no surfaces shown, and we get all frustrated but not really knowing what went wrong. Sometimes, we run the OSM diagnostic script and reopen the diagnostic.osm file and things are fixed, but other times, we are not so lucky and end up recreating the entire geometry from step 1. Is there a way or code to follow to diagnose what went wrong when I reopen the .osm file so we can find the problem surfaces or sub-surfaces that accidentally didn't get created correctly? That would save us tons of time.

2014-10-15 16:25:23 -0500 commented answer How to trim down air flow at night for a make up air unit in OpenStudio?

I am trying to model a 100% OA make up air unit for a multifamily corridor with relief damper. There is no terminal reheat VAV box. I am only using AirTerminal:SingleDuct:Uncontrolled option with one terminal serving one corridor zone. Zone temperatures were met fine because the corridors are having relaxed thermostatic controls. Setting the system to be DOAS with maximum OA fraction 50% at night did not change the fan energy consumption. Uncontrolled air terminal also doesnot have a field for minimum air flow fraction schedule.....

Hi there, I'll need to model a makeup air unit in OpenStudio that has its fan running at high speed during the daytime and low speed (50% flow rate) at night. I put in a VFD fan on the MUA, adjusted its availability schedule and minimum flow fraction, but no changes happen. Do I have to add a customized EMS EnergyPlus script to make this work?

Thanks Xia
