2021-05-25 10:55:12 -0500 | answered a question | Is it possible to perform a detailed simulation of the effect of long-wave radiation from surrounding environment (buildings) and ground in EnergyPlus or any urban energy model (coupled or not)? Yes, EnergyPlus enables you to do so. The attached article (http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/en13092382) describes the EnergyPl |

2016-01-10 13:26:38 -0500 | asked a question | Measured behavioral data to create a library of occupant behavior models for building performance simulation We develop an XML schema to represent energy-related occupant behavior in buildings for modeling and simulation. Currently we are looking for measured datasets to extract occupant behavior and represent them in obXML. A library will be shared with the simulation community. Further info at behavior.lbl.gov. |
2016-01-10 13:22:41 -0500 | asked a question | Occupancy data to validate LBNL's Occupancy Simulator We developed an agent-based occupancy simulator, free to use at occupancysimulator.lbl.gov. Our next step is to validate the results with real occupancy data of all spaces in a small building. If you have or know such data, please let us know. Thanks. Your feedback on the App is welcome too. |
2015-11-17 11:31:07 -0500 | commented answer | Engine Feature Comparison EnergyPro also uses some other engines or calculations beyond DOE-2.1E, so it is better to list DOE-2.1E. |
2015-11-17 11:27:47 -0500 | commented answer | Engine Feature Comparison Yes both relate to interaction with or control of energy services in buildings in response to occupants needs or demand response signals. The 'user-defined control' feature can include them as long as it enables adequate coding to implement these types of controls. |

2015-07-22 22:13:28 -0500 | answered a question | EnergyPlus fenestration solar cooling load very low Are you using same weather data? Did you model window frames explicitly? Shading on windows will reduce solar loads. |
2015-07-22 22:05:58 -0500 | answered a question | Which is the proper "ZoneInfiltration:DesignFlowRate" value, with ideal air loads? Infiltration varies significantly among buildings and time. PNNL report PNNL-18898, Infiltration Modeling Guidelines for Commercial Building Energy Analysis (pdf), is a good reference. |

2015-06-18 19:36:13 -0500 | answered a question | Heat Recovery mode of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in OS1.6 It is far beyond changing a single input in an IDF of VRF-HP systems to model heat recovery type VRF systems. There needs to have different curves, controls, and other inputs. We/LBNL are developing and implementing a new VRF-HP model in EnergyPlus, as Edwin mentioned. We have (unfortunately the PDF file cannot be attached at this site) an ASHRAE conference paper describing the new VRF-HP model. A corresponding VRF-HR model will be implemented too in future. |
2014-11-16 00:23:32 -0500 | answered a question | Adsorption Chillers in EnergyPlus? Good question! This is a correction to my previous post. The current absorption chillers (Chiller:Absorption and Chiller:Absorption:Indirect) in EnergyPlus does support both steam and hot-water, where you can set the option for the field "The Generator Heat Source Type". The "steam" word in some field names causes some confusion. So you may want to use the performance curves for hot-water adsorption chiller to simulate its performance, but it is recommended to verify the simulated results against the measured data. Thanks, |

2014-09-29 22:20:34 -0500 | answered a question | How do I model natural ventilation for LEED in EnergyPlus? Basically you need to model hybrid ventilation system, when natural ventilation is adequate to meet cooling loads, the mechanical cooling system is off; otherwise the mechanical cooling system (providing minimum ventilation air also) will be on and the natural ventilation is off. |
