2017-03-20 06:59:31 -0500 commented question EnergyPlus schedules and daylight savings time

My understanding is that E+ applies daylight saving time when either of these conditions are met a) if epw file has Daylight Saving Start Date and Daylight Saving End Date in the line HOLIDAYS/DAYLIGHT SAVINGS and input field Use Weather File Daylight Saving Period in RunPeriod object in idf is set to Yes b) Or epw may not have daylight saving period but idf has RunPeriodControl:DaylightSavingTime object.

2017-02-17 03:18:46 -0500 commented question Error: ** Severe ** ProcessSurfaceVertices: Divider area exceeds glazed opening for window...

Divider area is calculated as follows.

DivArea = DivWidth * ( HorDividers * Surface.Width + VertDividers * Surface.Height - HorDividers * VertDividers * DivWidth );
DividerArea = DivArea * Surface.Multiplier;

Since Surface.Multiplier = 1, for HorDividers=0, VertDividers = 6, DivArea = 1.08 (as you correctly calculated). and for HorDividers=6, VertDividers = 0, DivArea = 23.4. (seems incorrect and is what E+ is calculating) Debugging idf with E+ source code or posting link to actual idf will help in seeing what is going on inside E+.

@NickC, This excel tool parses the Energy+.idd and print out all the objects along with their required input fields. I could only do limited testing so if you find any issue while using this tool, please do let me know. All objects and required input fields for E+ versions 7.2, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, and 8.6 are also in the spreadsheet. Looks like in v 8.6, "required-field" special comment is removed from a lot of input fields.

2016-12-02 20:36:10 -0500 edited question Temps differ for adjacent nodes

Dear UMH folk, My EnergyPlus heating loop has two adjacent nodes that, in my mind, should have identical properties. One node is the supply side outlet node, the other is the demand side inlet node. I've confirmed via IDF review and SVG file that they are indeed adjacent ... but they have temperatures differing by several degrees C. That doesn't make sense to me.

Can one of you shed some light on why that might occur?

2016-07-21 13:00:04 -0500 commented answer Default Condenser Loop Tower and Evaporative Fluid Cooler Design water flow rate

Refer to note in the idd for Nominal Capacity input filed in CoolingTower:SingleSpeed. It is TR and not THR. Catalog data shows 29-424 nominal tons for 87 to 1272 GPMs from simple 3 GPM/Ton rule. While 87GPM∗8.33BTU/gal∗60min/h∗10F/12000 give 36.24 (i.e. 29*1.25) and same is true for all other GPMs. The confusion here is because Nominal Capacity is thought as 36.24 Ton while EnergyPlus expects it as 29 Ton and 1.25 should specified in the input field in Heat Rejection Capacity and Nominal Capacity Sizing Ratio. Design tower load within E+ will then be calculated as 1.25 * 29 = 36.24.
