I am modeling an all variable speed chiller plant in OpenStudio. The chilled water pumps are designed in a primary-secondary configuration with the pumps connected to their respective headers. This arrangement can be implemented in EnergyPlus but I want to do this in OpenStudio 1.6.

However, the common pipe (for primary-secondary configuration) and headered pump objects are not yet supported in OpenStudio as far as I know, but I understand this can be done using measures. Has anyone encountered this situation?

Any guidance is highly appreciated particularly in writing the measures to access the cited EnergyPlus objects from OpenStudio.

The EnergyPlus team advocates using the HeatExchanger:FluidToFluid object to model primary/secondary chilled water systems.

Check out the Plant Application Guide that comes with the EnergyPlus documentation here: (C:\EnergyPlusV8-2-0\Documentation\PlantApplicationGuide.pdf) and the example file (C:\EnergyPlusV8-2-0\ExampleFiles\PlantApplicationsGuide_Example3.idf) to see how the heat exchanger settings are configured.

You can build this system directly in OpenStudio (see screenshots below). Note that the heat exchanger on the primary and secondary loops are the same object. You can connect a heat exchanger that is already in the model connected to the first loop to a second loop by going to "My Model" on the right and dragging it onto the second loop.

Hi, @aparker the mentioned example file (energyplus v9.2) results that heat exchanger supply side outlet temp is much higher than heat exchanger demand side inlet temp, which means the cooling coil cannot served by a chilled water with expected temperature. Do you have any idea on it? If I want to transfer chilled water from one loop to another one in exactly same condition, is it possible to use heat exchanger?
