How can I model a double or triple pane window in Openstudio?

Hello all,

I am trying to model a double pane window which I have the optical properties including solar heat gain and visible transmittance. However, I cannot find out how to define the number of panes and the gas between for a window in Openstudio. It is neither under the simple glazing window system nor under the glazing window materials. So I was going to define the glazing window materials and the gas window materials (under materials) and then use them as layers(under construction)for a specific window. However, the problem is that I have the properties for the whole window, not every single pane. So, I would appreciate if you let me know the right way for doing this.

P.S. I am using Opentstudio for Radiance simulation.

You can also download them from BCL:

Components & Measures > Find Components
Browse to Construction Assembly > Fenestration > Window
Type "triple" or whatever in search bar > ENTER
Click on a construction to see the properties on the right side
Click the check box, then download

Close the dialog
Library (right column) > Constructions you should see the one you downloaded
Drag it into your Construction Set

Hi, I've created my building model with an existing Fixed Window 3.12/0.40/0.31 but I need to replace that with a double glazing window. I followed the steps above to download "double glazing" but I didn't know how to replace it with the existing window. Can you please explain to me how to do that? Thanks

I think you can create every layer for the glazing under under glazing windows materials. Then if you go to construction tab you an create a new external windows construction and add the layers that you created from my model tab from your right side. Another option is to create a Simple Glazing System Windows Material and input the total VLT and SHGC from the triple window. If you have those properties.

As @Maryam is specifically using Radiance in OpenStudio, I should mention that there is currently a bug (fixed for the next iteration release) in the OpenStudio-Radiance translator that prevents it from working properly on multi-layered constructions. (!)

@Maryam also notes that she has properties for the whole assembly and not the individual elements of the IGU. This is actually perfect for the simple glazing material; just use these properties to make a simple glazing material, apply that single material to a construction, and apply that to your triple pane windows.

Yep, if you're using the WindowMaterial:SimpleGlazingSystem object, you enter the performance values (SHGC, VLT, and U-value) for the entire IGU into this one material, and make a construction consisting of this single layer to represent the whole system. P.S. The multi-layer translation bug was fixed today, so starting with the next iteration release of OpenStudio you'll be able to follow the other suggestions here. =)
