EnergyPlus Error initiating text editor

asked 2026-02-25 19:30:29 -0500

To whom it may concern,

I have worked with EnergyPlus v.25.1.0 for a couple of months. A couple of days ago, I tried to check some elements using the Edit - Text Editor button on the EP-Launch. But, I got the following message:

"Error editing text editor. This is likely due to the text editor program being deleted or moved. Please use the VIEW OPTIONS menu to select a new TEXT EDITOR program."

I searched online for a solution. I clicked on View menu, chose Options, looked for Text Editor Options and selected Auto Find. This solved the problem...for a couple of seconds. Then, my Antivirus closed the file and placed the EnergyPlus.exe file into quarantine. I searched again for another solution. Finally, I downloaded EnergyPlus v.25.2.0 and clicked again the Edit - Text Editor button on the EP-Launch. Nevertheless, I got the same message as before.

I am not sure what could be the following steps to follow. Any comments or suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Is EP-Launch being quarantined by your antivirus? If not, you might want to use View Options Text Editor and then press the Select button and explicitly find the text editor you want to use.

Dear Mr. Jason Glazer,

Thank you for your help! I tried to select the Text Editor a couple of times again, but I had some troubles in the process. So, what I did was find/open Notepad and open the *.IDF file directly. This file finally opened, and I edited what I needed. I saved these changes, closed the file, reopened it in EnergyPlus and clicked the simulation botton. The program then prompted me to update the file from EnergyPlus 25.1.0 to 25.2.0 using the FILE option within EnergyPlus. I did this, and it created the following two files: a *.IDF and a *_V2510.IDF. The first one is for version 25.2.0. I ran the simulation with this file and got what I was looking for. Any new comments or suggestions will be highly appreciated!
