2016-11-11 15:00:43 -0500 answered a question Most times I open an existing model I have to reset the weather file

The OpenStudio model looks for the weather file in the model directory, of the same name in the same location, under the files folder. If you don't have that directory, folder, and weather file, you will get this warning. Typically, you will want to use File - Save As to move models because it will then bring the files folder (along with the other folders) and thus the weather file with it.

2016-06-20 11:00:46 -0500 answered a question Where can I find the max and min monthly dry bulb temperatures?

A great resource for looking at and even editing EPW files is Elements. If you open your EPW file in Elements, you can click on the Dry Bulb Temperature column and then the Normalize by Month button above it. You can then change the Scaling Method to Scale by Minimum/Maximum and it while show you the Current Min and Current Max temperature for each month.

2016-04-12 18:02:09 -0500 marked best answer What are some good programs/applications to use as a text editor for EnergyPlus models?

If you want to modify an EnergyPlus .idf file using a text editor, are there specific text editing programs/applications that users like? Along with the text editor, do users use syntax highlighting to allow for easier editing and visualization?

2016-04-12 18:02:02 -0500 marked best answer What are some standards or rules-of-thumb that can be used for daylighting design?

When doing a preliminary design for daylighting, what are some common standards or rules-of-thumb that people use to determine feasibility or to incorporate daylighting areas into an energy model? I've seen sources that state the daylighting depth would be 1.5 times the ceiling height, but I've also seen the daylighting depth would be 2.5 times the window-head height (floor to top of window) for example.

As a bonus question, I'm working on a basketball court in a gym with 34' ceilings where side daylighting is of interest. Would the same standard or rules-of-thumb apply when dealing with such high ceilings, or does it depend more on the window size/location at that point?

2015-09-22 09:15:05 -0500 marked best answer How can I create a custom weather file to use for a calibrated energy model?

A calibrated energy model requires using actual weather data for a previous year or time frame to calibrate with. Actual weather data can come in different formats and may need to be used for different weather file formats (.BIN and .EPW for example).

2015-06-11 16:27:08 -0500 marked best answer When calibrating an energy model, what are the typical metrics to show proper calibration.

When calibrating to either monthly utility bills, meters, sub-meters, or other means, are there variance or percent error metrics that show proper calibration? What are some sources for this information?

2015-06-01 16:37:57 -0500 answered a question Heat Recovery mode of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in OS1.6

I have used the Heat Pump Waste Heat Recovery field and have gotten mixed results. I have found that the heating energy decreases (gotten as much as 10-15% for a small hotel, but usually under 5%) but the cooling and fan energy increases, almost negating my energy savings. I also noticed the heat recovery would sometimes have a significant impact on the number of unmet hours, reducing them quite a bit.

I do see that the +.idd file says "This field is reserved for future use. The only valid choice is No." but I believe that is out-of-date. The Input Output Reference document says differently and the Engineering Reference even goes into a fair amount of detail about the Heat Recovery Mode and it's effects, which would be a good resource to look at.
