I am trying to capture uncertainty due to user behaviour with my model and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for best practice on how to do this? I am carrying out multiple runs to explore the effects of uncertainty around usage patterns (occupancy, lighting, equipment and heating cooling set point schedules). This is part of a global sensitivity analysis and the more variables I have the more runs I will need. The two approaches I have considered are:
At the moment, I think my preferred approach is the 2nd one, with a simplified schedule, so just a variable for the on time and a variable for the off time (ie. 2 variables per schedule). However, I haven't been able to find any precedents in the literature to suggest an approach. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better approach? Thank you! |

Apologies for what is almost certainly a very dumb question but I'm struggling to understand what the boiler efficiency curves in the EP example files actually represent. Looking at InputOutput reference for the formula and plotting the biquadratic condensing boiler efficiency curve data given in the boilers.idf file gives Eff = 112% at 0.1 part load and Twater = 50oC for example. The coefficients for the curve define the curve completely so I'm not sure what the nominal thermal efficiency field is used for. I've looked at the Veissman technical guide referenced in Boilers.idf and while it contains a graph showing the curve I've plotted it doesn't have any other explanation. I thought the part load efficiency was the thermal efficiency but guess I must be wrong or it shouldn't be over 100% I've had a look for other boiler efficiency curves and the only other data I could find was in the ACM reference manual for california building code compliance. The coefficient values there give a very different curve for a condensing boiler, ie. Eff = 96% at 0.1 cartload and Twater = 50oC. My overall aim is just to model a non-domestic condensing boiler that is available in the UK but unfortunately have very little data on efficiency: Boiler efficiency Part load 30% at 50/30°C (gross) 97.4 % Boiler efficiency Full load 100% at 80/60°C (gross) 88.2 % If anyone could enlighten me I'd be very grateful! Can I just move it into position and then intersect it? And finally, is it possible to change the OS settings to metric? Currently I have to convert the storey height to imperial when I am using the diagram tool even though SUP is in metric settings. Thank you very much, Pamela |

Is it possible the problem is related to the ceiling height? When I try to create the gym as a separate space it still doesn't work, I just get a roof but no wall height. However, if I let the storey height be 10' (rather than 27.9' ) it does seem to work. The problem is that I can't then use the SUP push/pull tool to pull it up higher as it seems to be disabled for the OS spaces once they've been created. Although I guess I could scale it... |

2015-03-04 05:19:05 -0500 | asked a question | Difficulty creating spaces in OpenStudio/SketchUp I am a very new user so apologies for the dumb question but I am trying to model a school building in OS/SUP. I have imported a plan which I have traced over and used the OS create spaces from diagram button to create the ground floor but I cannot create the gym hall space. I can't see any errors but wonder if it is because this space shares some internal walls but is much taller than the adjacent spaces which means the lower part of the wall is internal and the top part is external. Is there a general resource which gives a bit more detail than the tutorials on the Open Studio? I am also wondering about how to create a different second floor and link the stair wells between first and second floors. Is all of this written down somewhere which I just haven't found yet? |
