For the EnergyPlus object AirConditioner:VariableRefrigerantFlow I can't find an example in the InputOutputReference or in the example files where the Piping Correction Factor for Length in Heating Mode Curve Name or the Piping Correction Factor for Height in Heating Mode Coefficient {1/m} inputs are used. Because these are blank changing the Equivalent Piping Length used for Piping Correction Factor in Cooling Mode {m}and Vertical Height used for Piping Correction Factor {m} only effects the cooling energy use of the system and has no effect on the heating use of the system. Does anyone know if these were intentionally left blank in the documentation and example files? Does anyone have a example curve and coefficient for the heating piping correction factor curve and coefficient?

I am working on a E+ energy model with water-to-water heat pumps and am trying to generate curves for the heating and cooling water-to-water heat pump objects. I would like to use the "Water-to-Water Heat Pump Parameter / Coefficient Generator" in the AuxiliaryPrograms documentation and it says that the Excel curve generator files are at energyplus.net/extras. When I go the website I get an access denied message even though I am logged into my E+ account. Does anyone know where the WaterWater_PE_Cooling.xls and WaterWater_PE_Heating.xls spreadsheets are or have a copy they could send me?

I am working on a project that has a district plant, and due to the fact that it is a LEED project, I need to create a steam to HW plant in my model. I have created two loops, a HW loop with all of my HW coils in the project and a fluid to fluid HX, and a steam loop with a steam boiler and the fluid to fluid HX. image description image description

When I try to run this I get the following error: image description

I have the steam plant sizing set to "steam" with appropriate temps and the plantloop fluid type set to "steam". Has anyone had any experience with this error in OS? It seems like an issue in converting the OS model to a E+ idf. I have had this error any time I try to model a primary/secondary loop with a HX as well. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

In a Energplus or OpenStudio model that uses glazing and frame and divider objects from Windows 6, how can you find the window's assembly U-Factor and SHGC? The eplustbl.htm gives the glazing and the frames U-Factors, but no assembly values. I dug through the input/output reference to try to find a output that would give me this, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know in what output I can find this information?

2017-07-12 07:13:21 -0500 marked best answer Multiple Meters for a Single Building

I have a OpenStudio model with a office tower and a multifamily tower. I am trying to create a custom meter so that I can have different utility rates for each part of the building (commercial for the office, residential for the multifamily).

I know that I can create a Meter:Custom object and apply a UtilityCost:Tariff to that meter. Looking in the eplusout.mdd file I have lighting electricity and internal load electricity for each zone, but all of the HVAC energy use is for the entire building. The residential and office towers have different HVAC systems, but I am not sure how to meter each system separately. Is this possible to do?

The only approach I can think of is to use output variables to get the total energy use from each HVAC system and then manually apply the utility rate. For the residential flat rate this would not be a issue, but this would be very difficult for the demand charges for the commercial rate.

Does anyone have a good solution for multiple meters in one model?

Does anyone know what the two different columns for unheated and heated slabs represent in Table A6.3 ? Why are there different F-Factors for the same horizontal insulation distance and the same R-value? The example below that is highlighted is that if I have a slab with 12 inches of R-5 horizontal insulation is the F-Factor 0.72 or 0.61?

Thanks for the answer Eric!

2017-04-12 11:55:38 -0500 asked a question OpenStudio 2.1 Apply Measure Now Deleting Always Run Measures

In the OS App (v2.1) when I run an apply measure now measure, the always run measures under measures tab are all deleted. This is really annoying because I always have the OS reports and a utility rates measure in that tab and I keep having to add them again and again as I run apply measure now measures.

Is anyone else having this issue with 2.1? Any known corrections?

2017-04-05 15:00:06 -0500 commented answer How are the Process Subtotal (\$) and Total Energy Cost (\$) calculated in the Utility Bills/Rates section of Open Studio Results.

The virtual rate is just the total cost for electricity divided by the total kWh, which gives you $/kWh that includes all of the charges in the utility rate structure. It is the same for gas.

2017-03-30 16:11:55 -0500 commented answer does energyplus modify air density based on elevation (both indoor and outdoor air)

When is ASHRAE Standard 205 schedule to be released?

2017-03-30 15:12:54 -0500 commented answer does energyplus modify air density based on elevation (both indoor and outdoor air)

Hey Neal, I know that E+ calculates the density of air for airloops, but what about for condenser efficiency? The condenser full and part load efficiency is entered by the user in the form of a COP and the equipment curve for air-cooled chillers, DX, and VRF equipment. These curves do not take into account the de-rating of the condenser efficiency at a lower air density correct? So my understanding is the user must account for this.

2017-03-10 08:50:08 -0500 commented answer 90.1 Lab MakeUp Air unit flow

My interpretation of the code is to reduce exhaust and "makeup air" by 50%. Makeup air is outdoor air or transfer air, so I just assumed it was outdoor air. Also, the exhaust fan object has a similar schedule input that will reduce the exhaust at night by the fraction of the schedule as well.

2017-03-09 17:16:31 -0500 edited answer 90.1 Lab MakeUp Air unit flow

In OS, under the Space Types tab there is the "Design Specification Outdoor Air" object. The object has an input for a fractional schedule called "Outdoor Air Flow Rate Fraction Schedule Name". Create a schedule that is 1 during occupied hours and 0.5 during unoccupied hours and OS will reduce the amount of outdoor air for the zone by 50%.
