NSRDB vs ERA5 for TMY Solar Data

It appears that the TMYx 2004-2018 weather files use the NSRDB for solar irradiance values in the US and TMYx-2007-2021 use the ERA5 reanalysis data set.

Does anyone have any insight into the reason for this change away from the NSRDB and/or general thoughts on what the impact/differences will be?
