Modeling a storage device in Energyplus

hello friends,

So I'm just getting started with energyplus, I will be using it in my research. The idea is to build a model for a thermal storage device in energyplus, I've started reading the ems documentation and it seems this will be done with the erL language. ( the the first paragraph describes this functionality as something only for advanced users and not meant for everyone) my question is : how long is the learning curve for a complete beginner in erl and is there another language like python for example, that can be used instead to model new components in energyplus ?

thank you!
