I have a functioning EnergyPlus model in version 8.2 that runs without any severe errors. I would like to be able to utilize some of the PAT functionality of OpenStudio and have been working to import the EnergyPlus IDF into OpenStudio 1.5. Unfortunately, whenever I do, I receive the following error:

"File is not valid to draft strictness"

The two errors mentioned are: Field level data error of type DataType Error is in an object of type 'Sizing:System', named '', in field 20. correct type. Field level data error of type DataType Error is in an object of type 'PlantLoop', named 'Water_Loop Mixed Water Loop', in field 18.

This error occurs when both directly importing through OpenStudio application, and when importing the IDF using the SketchUp Plugin.

I am trying to understand what objects need to be altered so that I can import the EnergyPlus model into OpenStudio. Any help would be appreciated

I'm surprised you got that far with an 8.2 IDF file. OpenStudio expects an IDF file of the same version of EnergyPlus it generates on export to IDF or when running simulations. For OpenStudio 1.5 this is EnergyPlus 8.1. If the IDF file doesn't have a version object it may try to open it, but may not work.

Keep in mind even if you have an 8.1 IDF HVAC elements won't import. While not at all supported you could edit the IDF to only contain internal loads, schedules, materials, constructions, surfaces, and zones and try to import that. If any of these object types have changed from one E+ version to the next this would not work.

@DW. OpenStudio cannot read the entire EnergyPlus IDD. It can generate it, but it cannot read it—reading is more complicated, and also useful in fewer instances. I will let a guru - @David Goldwasser @aparker - describe the detail, but: i) you should be able to import the geometry, constructions, and space and loads, and ii) you would have to recreate the HVAC systems within OpenStudio. Not ideal, but better than nothing. <os management="" hat="">We understand that reading EnergyPlus is important too and we are working on that as resources allow.</os>.

By the way, how did you create this 8.2 model?

No, changed the (@David Goldwasser @Andrew Parker) so they would hyperlink. Looks like the ( ) surrounding prevents it.

following what I'm reading in this thread - if I want to translate the DOE Commercial Reference Building .idf files that are EnergyPlus 7.2 files to .osm, then I'd need to wind back to OpenStudio 1.0?

thx.

Thank you, this is an old project that was originally constructed in EnergyPlus 7.0. I am working on upgrading it to the latest version of OpenStudio in order to utilize PAT. I was able to run IDF version updater to 8.1 and have imported geometry, internal loads, schedules, materials and constructions from EnergyPlus 8.1 into OpenStudio already.

I was just hoping I wouldn't have to re-build the whole HVAC system. But, it sounds like there's no way around that. I am working on that now using some of the measures from BCL. Thank you for the feedback.

As @Amir Roth mentioned, OpenStudio does not perform a complete IDF import. The details about what is/isn't imported can be found here:
