How do you download HVAC equipment/Components from BCL and import into the OpenStudio Application?

It appears downloading BCL components works properly for construction assemblies but not for building components. I would like to download the many components that are currently on the BCL (i.e. condensing boiler). What is the best approach for doing this?

I'll ping @Kyle Benne about this one, but will point out a few things.

  • Some BCL components don't have OSM objects, they just have some raw attribute data which may or may not be enough data to run a simulation. Here is one example of condensing boiler
  • If you have OpenStudio 1.7.0 you can add Ductless Heat Pumps form within the app.
  • Here is link to post about adding BCL content from a measure, but their are possible issues.

To elaborate on Kyle's response. The DOE analysis ecosystem enables the flow of information from two linked data sources into OpenStudio. The BCL is a fairly well known source at this point, but folks may not be aware of the Technology Performance Exchange, or TPEx. TPEx is designed as a source of performance data for a number of efficiency technologies, and differs from BCL, which houses energy modeling-ready content. There are automated translators in place for some technology categories in TPEx, which automatically translate that performance data into OpenStudio components suitable for drag-and-drop modeling. You can get a sense of the data flow in this diagram:

VRF was one of the early categories to receive this treatment, and others are planned in the coming months. TPEx is designed to accept data from manufacturers, pilot studies, and technology demonstrations. There is an active effort underway to increase availability of performance data for real systems and components.

Great graphic. How does ASHRAE Standard 205 fit in here if at all?

The intent is for future TPEx technology categories to align with Standard 205 annexes (assuming such annexes exist when the TPEx technology category is added). As Standard 205 annexes are published for existing TPEx technology categories, if differences in the technical data request exist, we would like to revise the TPEx data entry forms to bring them in-line with the Standard 205 documents.

I'll just validate what @David Goldwasser said, adding that almost all BCL HVAC components are missing osm data, except "Ductless Heat Pumps" aka VRF. We are continually working to find sources of data for more HVAC types and will add support for them in the OpenStudio Application as content is available.
