OpenStudio Sketchup - assign construction of multiple surfaces

Hello,

I am very new to SketchUp and OpenStudio and am trying to see if there is a quicker way to assigning surface attributes such as construction, boundary condition, and sun and wind exposure.

I am trying to select a whole bunch of surfaces together that are part of the same space and assign them with the same construction, boundary condition, sun and wind exposure all at once.

I can't seem to shift select surfaces in the OpenStudio Inspector, and when I select multiple surfaces in Sketchup, the Inspector only lets me edit them as a space.

It feels like there should be a way to do this instead of selecting each surface one by one and assigning construction etc. one at a time.

Really appreciate the advice!

@kim.tse1 when using the OpenStudio inspector, it can only access the first item selected, out of multiple objects. You can rely on surface matching to automate boundary condition assignments, and construction sets to avoid having to assign constructions to each surface. Another alternative is to use the grid view of the stand alone OpenStudio Application which does support multiple selection; however surface grid view may be slow to work with on a larger model.

If you are comfortable writing ruby code you could also modify an existing user script to do what you want. There is one that removes hard assigned constructions, and another that changes the boundary condition adiabatic and assigns a construction. Either of those would be a good starting point if you were interested.

I guess I'm just surprised that a multi-selection option isn't available in the SketchUp Openstudio version.

Hi @david-goldwasser, if I apply a default construction set in Sketchup, and then opened the file OpenStudio App and I can see the correct constructions have been applied to the surfaces. But if I reopen the file in Sketchup, the Construction Name is blank for all surfaces in the Inspector (unless I go in an manually set the construction name for a surface). Interestingly, the construction name is available in exported IDF files, both from Sketchup and from the OpenStudio App.

(edit: I see there is some inheritance going on which explains this I think)

@max.melchior the OpebStudio application has been setup to show inherited constructions, while the SketchUp plugin is just showing the raw field in the surface object. The render by construction can show inherited constructions. I think it will cycle through direct and hard assigned if you click it multiple times.
