Problems creating windows in Sketchup

asked 2019-12-02 10:27:42 -0600

Hello,

I am new to Sketchup/OS and trying to create a window that is nearly floor to ceiling. I've tried drawing with a full border and it worked but how do I create a window surface without or just partial border? Is there a manual way to assign surface as window?

Eugene, first click on the surface you want to insert a window. On upper menu you will see "Extensions", clik on it and follow the path "OpenStudio User Scripts > Alter or Add Model Elements > Set Window to Wall Ratio "

Thanks Chris. It wont allow me to set the surface to 100% window. I am getting an error that Window/Wall ratio has to be less then 1 and offset more then 0. It is very easy to trace the CADs exactly and then add framing in the parameters.

Thanks,

Eugene

If you want to use the OpenStudio SketchUp plugin you need to have a minor inset of your window on all sides, although the bottom can touch the floor, but you would have to change it from door to window. You can not change a base surface to a type of sub-surface, but you can change sub-surface type from door to window. The problem with trying to support full size windows in SketchUp within a surface group is that two entities can't exist directly on top of each within a single surface group. As Chris mentioned you can use the script to use ratio of 0.97 or manually draw large window.

Thanks for clarification David. So if I understand this correctly, this is a limitation in EnergyPlus?

No, technically EnergyPlus can have a sub-surface the same size as the base surface that hosts it, it is more of a limitation of how the viewing/editing of the surfaces in the SketchUp Plugin are implemented. EnergyPlus can also handle sub-surfaces out of the plane of the base surface.

Oh I see ok. Hopefully that could be fixed in the future release as it would make drawing curtainwall or full height/width windows much easier.

Thanks again!
