I have created a wall in Openstudion which comprises several materials, I calculated the R-value of each material and sum them up to calculate the total R-value and U-value, then I found that the U-value that I have got is exactly the same as the U-value in the Eneregyplus result, which means the materials are in series. So the question is how to create a wall which has several materials in parallel?

The short answer- you can’t because EnergyPlus calculates 1D heat transfer. To include a wall with materials in parallel you have following options:

• Make a single wall with an equivalent R - with the weighted average of the 2 walls.

• Make 2 different walls using sub surfaces. Basically you draw a wall and then draw on it sub surfaces with different layers. More details here about sub surfaces.
