"Add Daylight Sensor at the Center of Space”

Hello,

I use OS 1.10.0 and want to add daylighting sensor using "Add Daylight Sensor at the Center of Space” measure. However, after I add daylighting sensor in os file and check the E+ file, it seems daylighting control is not created in E+ file and I cannot see any effect on lighting energy because of daylighting sensor. Do I miss anything?

Also, is there any place in OS platform where I could check daylighting sensor setup? Thanks.

When you're posting about a measure you downloaded from BCL, please include the direct link to it, so we don't have to go look for it and risk using a different one. Are you talking about this measure?

@Yan, The file you sent was a one space model that already had a daylight control in it, but it wasn't hooked up to a zone. If you run this measure it see's that the space already has a daylight control, and leaves that space alone. It assume that any sensors in the starting model were already hooked up how they should be, and it doesn't change them.

Here is what the measure log looks like. image description

Next I altered your model so it doesn't have a daylight control to start with. Here is the log from that measure. image description

I ran a simulation to confirm that it was functioning as expected. It shows Schedule Load Hours/wk of 61 and actual of 13. So it seems to be working as expected.

@David Goldwasser, thanks for your help. Which OpenStudio version do you use? After you re-ran the simulation, the daylighting sensor will be added to the space as well as the zone, right?

@Yan, the measure will add sensors to spaces without them, and these will be linked to zones. What was happening in your case was the model already had existing sensor(s), which were not linked to zones, and these continued to cause errors for you. The measure skips spaces with existing sensors in them, but does not check existing sensors for correctness.

@rpg777, thanks for your clarification. Actually my case was created from empty. The "existing" sensor is added by the measure, and it failed to link to thermal zone. Even I created a new space w/o sensor and applied the measure again, it still just added the daylighting sensor to the new space, didn't link to the thermal zone. It is not the problem of "existing" sensor. The problem is why the sensor added by the measure does not link to thermal zone. But it seems the measure works in the model of @David Goldwasser, I am wondering if it is because the version of the measure or the program.

@Yan. I'm using your model in the screenshots above. I'm using OpenStudio 1.11.3. In your original post you asked where you check daylighting sensor setup. For sensor specific settings look at OS:Daylighting:Control in the OpenStudio inspector in the SketchUp Plugin. To see if it is associated with a Thermal Zone go to the OS:ThermalZone category of the inspector. It has fields for Primary and Secondary Daylighting Control Name.

I'd be interested to see what that looks like for you, and what your interior lighting summary looks like.

Also make sure you are using the measure from BCL, and not a local copy that may have been altered.

How did you run this measure? Was it part of a PAT workflow, or was is a single measure run in the app? It looks like there should be log messages returned to you whether the measure was successful or not. It looks like this measure is designed to fail if some of the user inputs are bad or deemed incorrect. If the measure is claiming success and you are not seeing any change in the results (or any sensors added), then there may be a bug in the works here. Can you share a download link to your model?

I apply the measure in OS, not PAT workflow. It does add daylighting control in OS file, but in E+ idf file, I cannot see any daylighting control component.

Hmmm, could be a bug in the measure. I'll see if I can look into it, or get the author to do so.

@Yan, are you sure you had thermal zones associated with the spaces prior to running the measure. Also how do you know they daylight control objects are not in the IDF file? Are you inspecting with IDF or Text editor or looking at simulation results.

The IDF object should look something like this.

Daylighting:Controls,
Thermal Zone 1,                         !- Zone Name
1,                                      !- Total Daylighting Reference Points

@David Goldwasser, Yes, I had thermal zones associated before running the measure. Actually, if I use OS plugin in Sketchup, the daylighting control could be assigned successfully. I could find "Daylighting:Controls" in both .idf file and .osm files. But if I applied the measure in OS, and I open .osm file using text, I found "Daylighting:Controls" component. However, if I checked .idf file under the folder "5-EnergyPlusPreProcess-0", I cannot find any "Daylighting:Controls".

@Yan, I can't reproduce this with a generic model. Do you mind sending the OSM you are passing into the measure to OpenStudio@NREL.gov.
