In general, Unmet Hours follows the same rules as Stack Overflow. Here is their response to the idea of private messaging:

The consistent response to this is that it's a bad idea, because:

  1. It could hide information from the community: useful information transmitted privately is unavailable to other readers, subverting the core purpose of the site.

  2. It could be used to harass other users ("Answer my question!", "Accept my answer!", "Yer momma so fat she overflows the stack!", etc...)

Though in our case it might be: "...she puts the 'load' in unmet load hours". Not cool.

You can read the full post here.

Anyone can post their email address in their profile body text (Note: the actual "Email" field on your profile is hidden from other users for privacy reasons).

If you need to communicate with other users outside the context of a specific question or answer, I suggest using the Unmet Hours Slack channel.

Is it possible to invite someone to the Unmet Hours Slack channel without knowing their email address?

As far as the general response, it seems like Stack Overflow is fundamentally different than Unmet Hours because the BEM community is still relatively small. From my experience from running the onebuilding.org mailing lists, the BEM community a very professional, civil, and respectful of others. I would suggest that it would be worth creating some private method for contacting other members of Unmet Hours for times that the question is not hiding information from the community and seeing if it gets abused.

Jason, no you can't. Aside from adding a comment on a thread the person is following and saying something like "@JasonGlazer you should join Slack, see here" and then just hope the person gets there. I think adding your email in your body profile makes sense though.

Alternative ways: find the person on the mailing lists out there, or stalk the guy for a while on the internet (google, linkedin, etc), or just try "firstname.lastname@gmail.com". Or pick up a phone book and start calling every number that matches.

User's are able to add email to their profile. However, I think it would be nice to be able to private message someone on the site even if they did not list their email.

You can add your email to your profile, but I'm pretty sure other users cannot see it. Do you have an email set, @macumber? Because I can't see it. Can you see mine?

That might be a setting. @Neal Kruis?

I just added my email to my profile and I hope others will do the same.

The email entered under the UH users profile does not show up when viewed by other users. Maybe this needs correcting, or a method added to allow the email to be public.
