The building I am modelling has both AHU and radiant heat panels in some of the zones. The AHU heating coil is supplied through a heat exchanger from hot water to glycol. This hot water is from a district heating source. The problem I am running into is hot water from the district source also supplies the radiant heat panels. How do I tie these two items together? So the real question is can the zone equipment be connected to the district hot water loop or how do they interact with one another?

The next questions associated with that would be how do I model the heat exchanger in conjunction with the district heating. I was thinking of putting a heat exchanger on the demand side of the district heating loop, along with the radiant heat panels (if that is how it should be modelled). Then I was thinking that I could create another loop that has a heat exchanger as a supply. Is that even possible in OpenStudio or am I going about it the wrong way.

Below is an image of how the district heating and cooling are tied into the AHU and radiant panels. The HRV can be ignored for this question.

I think you can go two way about this:

  • Simplified: Have two separate plant loops with each a district heating object on it.
  • Detailed: Model the Heat Exchanger (HX) explicitly

If you want to explicitly model the Heat Exchanger, then yes, you would have a primary loop with on the supply side the district heating object, and on the demand side the radiant panels and the HX, which would be on the supply side of the secondary plant loop.

Primary plant loop:

Primary Plant Loop

Secondary plant loop: (coil on demand side is linked to AHU air Loop)

Secondary Plant Loop

Obviously you'll have to understand the sequence of operation correctly, especially for the setpoints on each plant loops.

Yes I will be able to input all the parameters, that will be no problem. This way is the way I was trying to do it but I couldn't get the heat exchangers to link between the loops. Just need some guidance on how to connect the two heat exchangers.

Never mind I do believe I figured out what my problem was. I was adding two different heat exchangers when I just have to add the same exchanger from "My Model" to connect the two.

That's correct, you take one from the library and place it on one loop. Then on the second loop you go to "my model" to find it. Likewise, the Radiant coils you'll have to define them on the "Thermal zone" tab

@Dustin, you marked this question as "unanswered" again. Is something not working?

Sorry about that. Was trying to close some of my existing questions and accidentally hit this one. This was answered and I have modelled this. Thanks again.
