How to use Radiance with Open Studios ?

Hello, My name is Rafid and I’m new to using Radiance with Open Studios. I have a project that is due soon where I would like to use my Radiance to run the day lighting simulation in Open Studios.

I found a previous thread where a user wanted to learn how to use Radiance with Open Studios. I have seen a few youtube link from the NREL channel but I would like it if there was something more structured ? Like they have for general Open Studio modelling.

I am also a total newbie when it comes to using radiance so any info you can throw my way will be much appreciated. I just downloaded Radiance 4.2 for windows but am not sure how to use it in Open studios. Please help.

Kind Regards, Rafid Khan

Minor nit @RMAK, could you maybe edit the title of your post to read "OpenStudio" rather than "Open Studios"?

Hi Rafid (@RMAK),

Yes, the Radiance-related tutorial content is a bit lacking, and dated. The Radiance functionality in OpenStudio is also somewhat limited. But in order to use the basic features, the videos here do tell you what you need to do. Basically, for each space you want to analyze with Radiance: 1. Add an illuminance map 2. Add a daylighting control point 3. Link the daylighting control point to the illuminance map 4. Link the illuminance map to the space 5. Select Radiance as the daylight simulation engine on the "Run" tab

When you run the simulation, Radiance will be used to calculate the daylight levels, and the lighting schedules will be adjusted according to the occupancy schedule, the daylight availability, and the illuminance setpoint on the daylighting control point. This new schedule(s) will then automatically be merged into the EnergyPlus simulation.

Support for multiple spaces within a thermal zone, and shading controls is in development.

if the usage of Radiance in Open studio is limited, I wonder if there are any other possibilities of working with Radiance on Windows, rather than running the virtual linux machine?..

The Radiance functionality in OpenStudio is constantly improving, and indeed we have a lot planned for the fall release. That said, other options for using Radiance to evaluate daylighting abound, with Daysim, Honeybee, SPOT and LightStanza coming to mind. I would selfishly point out that technically all of these options are "limited" in one way or another; OpenStudio focuses on whole building integration of daylighting results, and does that the best of all the options, while being limited in other ways (which we are working on rectifying).
