I executed an OpenStudio model in PAT (Parametric Analysis Tool, V3.7.0), which failed with the error [20:03:33.184881 ERROR] Found error in state 'initialization' with message [Failed to load OSM file .... I tried to find the reason, and after digging into the model (starting from the simple model and progressively making it more complex), I found out that the reason for this failure was adding an Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger to the HVAC system of the building!

The model works well in OpenStudio without any error (I use openstudioapplication-1.8.0), but in PAT it fails. Without Heat Exchanger, PAT runs the model very well, but as soon as I add the Heat Exchanger, it fails.

Anybody else encountered this error before? Any thoughts on what would be the effects of adding a Heat Exchanger to make the model fails?

I don't know if this will solve your issue but... if your model was created in OpenStudio Application 1.8.0, you'd want to use PAT 3.8.0, otherwise you are mixing different versions of OpenStudio.

Thank you for the answer. I installed PAT 3.8.0 but had trouble to start the local server. link text

An Update

I couldn't run PAT 3.8, so I downloaded and installed OpenStudio Application 1.7.0. I created the model again using OS Application 1.7, and this time the model worked perfectly in PAT 3.7, even with the Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger.

So, as @shorowit correctly pointed out the problem was incompatibility between different versions.

Thank you.
