The best place to review possible output variables that EnergyPlus can generate is the Input Output Reference. This describes the input fields for all object classes as well as their output variables (hence the name, Input Output Reference).

If you search for the output variable name in the PDF (part of the EnergyPlus installation) or web form (URL that I shared above) of the Input Output Reference, you should find a description of that output variable. In this case, the object class that generates thermal comfort output variables is the People object class describing the zone's occupants. Your specific output variable "Zone Thermal Comfort ASHRAE 55 Adaptive Model 90% Acceptability Status" does have the three values you mentioned for specific situations:

  • 1: operative temperature falls into the 90% acceptability limits of the adaptive comfort in ASHRAE 55-2010
  • 0: operative temperature DOES NOT fall into the 90% acceptability limits
  • -1: calculating operative temperature does not apply (zone is unoccupied or running average outdoor temp is outside the range of 10.0 to 33.5C required for adaptive comfort)
