I think the "Merge Spaces From External Model" user script is what you are looking for. It is demonstrated in this YouTube video. It can be used to merge in updated geometry for spaces already in your model, and can merge in new spaces that only exist in the external model.

There is also a "Merge Spaces from External File" measure that has similar function that can be used outside of SketchUp. The measure has more features than the user script, it has options to control which model space attributes are from and can import or ignore internal loads and schedules from the external model. There is some work on a branch to pull in mechanical systems as well.
