Most energy modelling software like Equest or Open Studio let you input a degree relative to the north axis. If the building is rectangular, it has 4 faces to it. Which face do you choose to ascertain the input?

2015-04-21 02:10:09 -0500 asked a question Shading through overhanging roof

Roof Overhangs

I had modeled these ceiling overhangs in OpenStudio's SketchUp plugin. The surface type of the overhangs is the same as that of the actual ceiling. Does that suffice for E+ to assume it as a shading device?

2015-04-21 01:29:05 -0500 commented question What questions do you ask when doing sanity checks on a model?

Thanks @rdzeldenrust for asking this question.

I am facing the same dilemma with my model in OpenStudio. I ran a PAT(Parametric Analysis Tool) analysis too trying different building orientations but the results for each alternative differed negligibly. There is definitely something wrong with my baseline model. What do you guys think? What should I go back and check (in OpenStudio specifically)?

2015-04-20 23:52:02 -0500 commented answer How to test your baseline OSM model in PAT for different orientations?

@Matthew Thanks for the answer. I ran the simulation for different alternatives but the energy consumption only differed negligibly (1-2%) which leads me to believe that my baseline model is lacking in something. What could be wrong?

Thanks

I have prepared a baseline model in OpenStudio and now would like to determine the optimum orientation of the building for maximum energy efficiency. How do I test my baseline model in Parametric Analysis Tool for different orientations?

2015-04-16 23:25:41 -0500 asked a question ERROR: Surface Openings have too much area for base surface

I had developed a model for OpenStudio in SketchUp. On running the OpenStudio simulation, the following errors cropped up.

* Severe * GetHTSubSurfaceData: Surface Openings have too much area for base surface=SURFACE 10 * ~~~ * Opening Surface creating error=SUB SURFACE 5 * Severe * GetHTSubSurfaceData: Surface Openings have too much area for base surface=SURFACE 10 * ~~~ * Opening Surface creating error=SUB SURFACE 6 * Severe * GetHTSubSurfaceData: Surface Openings have too much area for base surface=SURFACE 10 * ~~~ * Opening Surface creating error=SUB SURFACE 7 * Severe * GetHTSubSurfaceData: Surface Openings have too much area for base surface=SURFACE 10 * ~~~ * Opening Surface creating error=SUB SURFACE 8 * Severe * GetSurfaceData: Zero or negative surface area[-19.83093], Surface=SURFACE 10

Note: Here SURFACE 10 is a Wall and SUB SURFACE 5,6,7 and 8 are FENESTRATIONS (doors and windows). The model looks fine in SketchUp, with the Subsurfaces comfortably sitting on the Surface 10. Pls help.

Thanks

2015-04-16 21:23:06 -0500 commented question Changing Subsurface back to Surface in OpenStudio

Add on: Infact one of the door on the surface is now labelled by OpenStudio as a wall, while the actual wall is assumed to be a door.

2015-04-16 21:18:47 -0500 asked a question Changing Subsurface back to Surface in OpenStudio

I was deleting previously modeled doors in my OpenStudio SketchUp model to make new ones. While deleting boundary lines of one of the door, my wall surface turned into a door(subsurface to surface). How do I change it back to a wall? I tried changing the construction of the now subsurface in OpenStudio, but it only allows me to change the now door to glass door, fixed window. Pls help.

Thanks

2015-04-14 20:42:23 -0500 commented question Determining the Heating and Cooling Loads for each zone

I am after the peak heating and cooling loads in kBtu/hr for each zone separately. I am not able to find these values in the Energy Plus Report. Can you help?

2015-04-14 16:41:57 -0500 asked a question Determining the Heating and Cooling Loads for each zone

We are working on a building design that will have 3 thermal zones. 2 of these zones are planned to be cooled through natural ventilation and ceiling fans. Only one of the thermal zone will have a couple of 'ductless mini splits'. We are also planning to use Radiant Floors for heating.

It is imperative that I understand the heating and cooling loads of the buildings. How do I do that with OpenStudio?
