2017-02-07 17:33:25 -0500 asked a question Equest 3.65 Refrigeration will not start

I have installed and re-installed Equest 3.65 a few times on my Windows 10 machine. I cannot get the refrigeration portion of the install to open.

When I click on eQRefrig.exe, I get an unable to load DOESimR.dll error. I am an administrator and using a local account. Using eQUEST.exe seems to work fine.

2016-02-19 07:09:49 -0500 answered a question Can Energy Plus simulate directly semi-transparent photovoltaics?

I studied the influence of semi-transparent PV on a large commercial building using E+. This is the way I did it, you may find another way. I ran two simulations 1) with the semi-transparent properties of the PV as windows (e.g. to calculate the change in loads). In this simulation no electricity is ‘generated’ you are just calculated the impact of the new fenestration. 2) using PV in place of these windows to calculate what would have been generated (the loads will not be correct as the fenestration will not be accurate because I believe in E+ PV can only go over walls, not windows). Use the results from (1) to determine the utilities and then subtract off what would be generated as calculated in (2). I did it at a fine resolution as I was particularly interested in the influence on peaks.

I was talking about the interfaces page, my memory is that OS used to be on there. It just seems like OS is on par with many of the others listed but I couldnt find it: https://energyplus.net/interfaces Good to see that it is mentioned on the page you linked.

Great! Thanks for everything in making this more visible and transparent.

2015-11-06 13:01:46 -0500 asked a question Openstudio not linked on EnergyPlus webpage

I am a heavy user of OS and needed to point some people to it and give them an overview of other front ends for E+ and why I have chosen OS. I am just curious why OpenStudio is not linked on https://energyplus.net/ , while many other similar software packages are.

2015-09-16 18:03:49 -0500 asked a question Heat rejection end use for cooling towers

In Openstudio, when you set up a chiller plant from a template and simulate, there is a quantity for heat rejection in the EnergyPlus output report. I assume this is heat rejection from the cooling tower.

If you use a similar cooling tower with say a series of water side heat pumps on the same building, a value of zero is in this end use category (heat rejection) in the output reports for EnergyPlus. Is this correct?

2015-07-16 09:51:08 -0500 commented answer Heat source on a water loop

Thank you Ivan and Archmage. These look like E+ objects. Do you know any way to do this in OpenStudio?

2015-07-15 23:27:16 -0500 asked a question Heat source on a water loop

I'd like to model heat reclaim by adding a constant heat source on a water loop. I don't want to model a heat source in a zone that passes through the air loop to the water loop.

Is this possible in OpenStudio / E+ (even if using a work-around)? The only thing I can think of is to add a pump with very low efficiency, and all of the inefficiency going into the water as heat.

2015-06-19 22:34:38 -0500 commented question Exporting results data from Openstudio

Yes, from Matlab you can connect to the .sql data file that is an output of the E+ simulation that is run in OS. If you have the database toolbox its a line or two of code. Look for the sql driver that comes packaged with OS, that was key when I did it.

Setting up query that results in vectors of simulation data is a bigger step and takes a bit of thought to sort out correctly. The first step is to get connected though.

I find connecting through the sql database to be a bit more robust and easier when you are changing # of outputs etc. Creating a csv file and importing to ML works too

The summaries of planned features are excellent! Does anyone know if there is something similar for E+ feature development?

2015-04-23 15:17:14 -0500 asked a question Openstudio run fails after successful simulation

I am trying to use the 'annual_end_use_breakdown' measure but my simulation run fails. The E+ simulation is fine as verified by the E+.err file. What steps can be taken to diagnose ruby script failures? I'm not sure where to start....

The measure works fine on the test model that is included on the BCL for the same ruby script

2015-04-23 10:29:12 -0500 commented answer Zone handle instead of name (E+ file & Output not OS)

I'm not sure I can pass this model around. I tried to replicated what I am seeing on a smaller model but was not able to reproduce the issue. I'll keep this issue on my desk and try to recreate it with a model I can distribute.

2015-04-23 10:25:43 -0500 commented question VRF system with huge no. of unmet hours only during heating

Daniel,

You mention that the the model takes '4 hours to heat up' while the real building doesn't. Differences in the transient performance may be due to capacities of the heating system, but are also strongly dependent on the building itself. Have you adjusted the thermal mass (either as a load or in the envelope) and/or other factors like fraction of heat that comes off lights, equipment, etc. It may very well be that your VRF is not operating correctly, but it is also possible that there are other reasons for discrepancy in the model-reality comparison.

2015-02-01 16:16:18 -0500 commented answer Remove all outputs from OS simulation

Thank you. When you say 'you can change that', what exactly should I change? Do I need to learn ruby scripting to output OS simulation data to csv? I'd like to get csv data from an OS simulation without taking the idf into E+ and executing the simulation there. Is that possible?

2015-02-01 14:43:02 -0500 commented answer Remove all outputs from OS simulation

Dan, Does this approach work in OpenStudio? Where would I add the rvi file? I used rvi files ~5 years ago in E+ to get >255 outputs. I tried for 3 hours this morning following many guides and I cannot seem to create one that will give me only the outputs I want. This is a second question. If I were to get it to work I would like to know where to put it.

Dragging the eso file to the E+ installation does not seem to work and dragging the ReadVarsESO to the working directory does not either.

I'd just like the easiest approach to create a csv file without variables that I dont want...

2015-01-20 15:57:36 -0500 answered a question Remove all outputs from OS simulation

Thank you!

This looks like a solution but I am teaching OS to a group of 40 students on a very tight time scale and this may be too much. It'd be nice to have full control of the output, I'm not sure why you cannot remove some of the output and select only the outputs that are relevant to the study at hand.

2015-01-12 12:37:53 -0500 answered a question OpenStudio WWR only on outdoor surfaces

Thanks, this works. Im just wondering for my own curiosity, why would surfaces not be matched when you use the OS function to 'Create a Standard Building Shape'. I do understand that if you are hand drawing internal partitions, you need to make the extra step to match surfaces, but when you create a standard building, it seems like it would be 'almost' ready to simulate (e.g. only zoning is needed).

Is there a reason to have unmatched internal partitions, for instance, does that offer you more flexibility?

2015-01-12 12:34:31 -0500 asked a question Remove all outputs from OS simulation

I would like to remove all of the outputs of an OS simulation. If I unselect all outputs, I still have electricity monitored.

The reason I want to do this is because I want to look at 3 specific outputs at an hourly interval. I need to do this in Excel. To do this I can extract the data using the eso tool in the E+ folder but when I do this for an OS model, it has electricity reporting at 6x an hour, which makes the spreadsheet very awkward. I'd like full control of the outputs.

2015-01-06 11:44:33 -0500 asked a question OpenStudio WWR only on outdoor surfaces

I'd like to build a quick box of a building that has windows. If I select the building and set the WWR it adds windows to internal partitions. I look at the rb script and there is some code for outdoor boundary conditions that I don't understand.

Is there a way to set the WWR on a building without doing it one surface at a time, this is the only way I have been able to do it for the past 2 or so years.
