Yes, think of these ASHPs as air cooled, reversible chillers serving the buildings heating/cooling water loops.

2016-06-27 14:38:01 -0500 commented question Merging unmethours accounts

You caught me! Actually, I have my work email address which I used when I originally subscribed. Then I created another account using my personal email. I think the best approach is to delete the personal email account, the edit my work account to change the email address to my personal email. My personal email account is fairly new and has little karma. I need all the karma I can get before I go to the big karma cash in in the sky ;-)

I am not sure to whom I should address this question. I have two accounts for the unmethours egroup. I have to drop one of the accounts but I would like my Karma to be merged with my other account. Is that possible?

2016-06-24 08:55:51 -0500 commented answer Weather file problem in Open Studio

I checked a few more Canadian CWEC EPW files - many have Int'l in the name. Others also have the dreaded ' such as St John's. I guess someone will have to run a script to replace all those offending ' characters.

2016-06-24 08:07:11 -0500 answered a question Weather file problem in Open Studio

I compared the Vancouver CWEC weather file with the Vancouver CN2014 weather file. In the CWEC file, the name of the station is Vancouver Int'l_BC_CAN. Recalling that the ' sometimes creates problems, I changed the name to Vancouver Int_l_BC_CAN in the EPW and DDY files. The project runs fine with this change.

2016-06-24 07:47:31 -0500 commented answer Weather file problem in Open Studio

I ran the same test. EnergyPlus runs and the EnergyPlus output htm table is generated and results look reasonable. But the same design_day_table error is thrown and the OpenStudio results html file does not get generated.

I also ran the file with the Vancouver CN2014 weather file generated by Whitebox Technologies - this weather file behaves correctly so the problem must originate in the Canadian CWEC weather files posted on the EnergyPlus site.

2016-06-23 06:29:38 -0500 answered a question Can't type "." (point key not working)

I use the ASCII decimal number for inserting atypical characters. For example, 10°C. The degree symbol is ASCII 248. Hold down the Alt key and type 248 on the numeric keypad, let the Alt key up and the character appears. The point or period decimal separator is Alt 046: .

2016-06-20 08:14:21 -0500 answered a question Where can I find the max and min monthly dry bulb temperatures?

Open the EPW file in your favorite text editor - one that doesn't wrap lines after a certain column. I use Ultraedit. The top part of the file is header information. Copy the rows below that header information - starting at row 9 right to the bottom of the file. Copy that data into an Excel sheet, use Text to Columns with the delimiter set to comma. The 6th column is drybulb. Use an excel array formula to get the min and max for each month. On a second sheet, enter 1,2,3,4,.. for each month in a column. Then enter the min and max formulas beside the month number. In the example I just created: {=MIN(IF(Sheet1!$C$3:$C$8762=Sheet2!$B4,Sheet1!$H$3:$H$8762))}. For array formulas, type the formula then use Ctrl-Shift-Enter to specify an array formula. Note, in my example, the weather data starts in Row 3, Column B - adjust the formulas depending on where you paste the data from the EPW file.

I don't know why some of the items get bolded in my answer.

2016-06-17 11:52:29 -0500 commented answer OpenStudio VersionUpdater: incorrect EffectiveLeakageAreas

m(m2) - how odd. Definitely not an SI unit at least up here in SI land (Canada - except for Alberta where you still see lots of drawings in Imperial units, but Alberta has always been different - last jurisdiction to implement mandatory seat belts - that kind of thing). m(m2) would be 1/1000 of a meter squared or 10 cm2. mm - milli meter - 1000th of a meter. SI drawings include mm and m - no cm. There are no 2.5 cm φ pipes, only 25 mm φ pipes. It would be much better if we were all on the same plain measurement wise.

2016-05-20 08:33:56 -0500 answered a question Electric Equipment Definition

2016-05-19 07:38:09 -0500 commented answer Can two HVAC systems in the same zone have different setpoints?

This is not an uncommon situation. I am just finishing off a project that has a water source VRF system for ventilation via an ERV, heating and cooling. The perimeter zones also have ceiling mounted radiation. There is a single temperature sensor controlling the VRF fan coil and the rad panel in each zone. The rad panel is controlled to 1°C below the heating set point, the VRF fan coil is controlled to meet the heating set point. Both systems come on when the space temperature drops more than 1°C below the heating set point. I didn't use EnergyPlus - I'm stuck in the last century.

2016-05-12 12:05:25 -0500 answered a question LEED - ASHRAE system 9 modelling CARRIER HAP

Is the project pursuing LEED v4? For LEED 2009, ASHRAE 90.1-2007 applies - no System 9. For ASHRAE 90.1-2010, System 9 only applies to heated only storage facilities, not for an office building. If the building is heated only, you still have to model a cooling system based on the 90.1-2010 System type. 90.1-2007 stipulates the same requirement - cooling is to be modeled even if there is no cooling in the proposed design.

2016-05-11 12:29:06 -0500 answered a question Electricity cost definition - Export to the *.eso file

One issue would arise if the electric utility has demand and energy block charges. In this case would would have to report the whole building demand and energy charge at each hour then prorate that amount to each end use.

2016-05-10 09:35:55 -0500 answered a question E+: Unbalanced air volume flow ratio through the heat exchanger is greater than 2:1

Some ERV/HRV manufacturers offer calculators to estimate the effectiveness of their equipment at different conditions: RenewAire This is a web based tool. Thermotech has a stand alone software for their equipment.

I have experimented with moving the low e coating from the #2 surface to the #3 surface using Window. I import the Window definitions into the model. There is a noticeable difference in results between using the Window definitions and simply using VLT/SHGC/U.

2016-04-29 12:07:27 -0500 asked a question Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Honeybee and related fauna

I am a long time energy modeler recently venturing into daylight modeling. I am now interested in gaining a grasp of visualization tools. I have seen a lot of references to Rhino, Grasshopper, etc. but I haven't found a good description of how these tools interconnect and how to go about getting started. There are many video tutorials on using various aspects of these different tools but no basic text description on how to get started. For example, generating shadow range analysis early in the design stage using the Architects drawing of the building. Or sunlight hour analysis.

2016-04-19 16:07:52 -0500 answered a question how do I determine U-factor for spandrel for LEED energy model?

I use FramePlus Online to calculate both the glazing and spandrel performance. Go to FramePlus Online. Start FramePlus, this brings you to the glazing page, then select Switch to Spandrel Panel. When specifying the width of curtain wall, measure two panels wide as FramePlus includes one middle framing member. FramePlus doesn't have all the glazings you might want to model. Pick glass layers that are close.

2016-04-14 12:28:36 -0500 commented answer Script/automation to add windows

This is a follow-up question and it probably shouldn't be in a comment but I am wondering if there is a way to download the script. I have been selecting all the text then copying and pasting into a new measure document. It would be convenient to press a download button but I don't see one on the page?

I am working with the ASHRAE Prototype EnergyPlus models. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe I can import these models into OpenStudio hence my query about EnergyPlus measures.
