2017-01-06 11:22:13 -0500 asked a question Design cooling load for radiant slab

Hello, I am modeling an active slab (in EnergyPlus 8.5) and need to determine the peak sensible cooling load. Currently, I am not including any ventilation, just sensible loads. In the output reports (i.e. Component Sizing Summary or "Peak Design Sensible Load" under Zone Component Load Summary), the reported peak loads match. However, when I look at the variables output for the design day condition (day and time) specified as peak in the output reports, the "Zone Radiant HVAC Cooling Rate" does not match. What is the difference between this value and the one reported in the output reports?

Hello, I am getting the following inlet/outlet node errors trying to model HW baseboard. All I have done is dragging and dropping the equipment into the zone equipment area under thermal zones. Is there something else I need to do to connect it on the plant side? Thanks

2015-09-30 10:02:54 -0500 asked a question OpenStudio - importing constructions sets from another model?

Is it possible to import constructions, construction sets, space types, etc. from another model? Does the "Load Library" feature only work with the default libraries or can I "load in" another project's (model-specific) library?

2015-09-29 13:17:55 -0500 answered a question Sketchup/Open Studio - modeling shading from adjacent buildings

Thanks Matt, that worked. In the OS edit object for "OS:ShadingSurfaceGroup", there's a drop down menu for "Shaded Object Name". Must something be selected for the shading calculation to work? I am guessing that for shading from adjacent buildings, rather than just exterior shades like fins, this could just be left blank since there is not a single surface the building(s) will shade?

2015-09-28 10:23:11 -0500 asked a question Sketchup/Open Studio - modeling shading from adjacent buildings

Hello, is modeling shading from adjacent buildings as easy as just creating the blocks in Sketchup and Open Studio will register these as building shading? I did a simple test where I created an adjacent building as a block in Sketchup, opened it in Open Studio, and in the "Facility" tab, under "Building Shading", see a "Shading Surface Group 1" object, which wasn't there previously. However, when clicking the actual object, it says "Coming Soon". Will this be captured correctly in EnergyPlus?

Thanks Phan

2014-11-17 07:40:04 -0500 commented answer Open Studio 1.5 Radiant Panel Surface Group Error

Thanks, and where do I get this InternalSourceConstruction from? There is a category for this in the library but no constructions within it, nor when I search the BCL.

2014-11-14 09:49:19 -0500 asked a question Open Studio 1.5 Radiant Panel Surface Group Error

I am getting the following error while trying to model a low temp radiant system:

Program Version,EnergyPlus-Windows-64 8.1.0.009, YMD=2014.11.14 10:36,IDD_Version 8.1.0.009
** Severe ** IP: IDF line~572 Object=ZONEHVAC:LOWTEMPERATURERADIANT:SURFACEGROUP, name=LOW TEMP RADIANT VAR FLOWCEILINGS, Required Field=[Surface 1 Name] was blank.
** Severe ** IP: IDF line~572 Object=ZONEHVAC:LOWTEMPERATURERADIANT:SURFACEGROUP, name=LOW TEMP RADIANT VAR FLOWCEILINGS, Required Field=[Flow Fraction for Surface 1] was blank.
** Warning ** IP: Note -- Some missing fields have been filled with defaults. See the audit output file for details.

The idf looks like this:

ZoneHVAC:LowTemperatureRadiant:SurfaceGroup,
Low Temp Radiant Var FlowCeilings; !- Name

and nothing else follows after this, so the surface names and flow fractions are missing (below is cut and pasted from EP input output ref):

ZoneHVAC:LowTemperatureRadiant:SurfaceGroup,
Zone 1 Radiant Surfaces, !- name of surface list
    Zn001:Flr001, !- Surface name 1

2014-11-14 08:56:12 -0500 asked a question Open Studio 1.5 - Zone has no surfaces

Hello, When running my simulation, I get this error:

Program Version,EnergyPlus-Windows-64 8.1.0.009, YMD=2014.11.14 09:02,IDD_Version 8.1.0.009
   ************* Beginning Zone Sizing Calculations
** Severe ** GetSurfaceData: Zone has no surfaces, Zone=THERMAL ZONE 1
** Fatal ** GetSurfaceData: Errors discovered, program terminates.

The geometry is a test model, a very simple one room zone created in SketchUp 2014. I projected all loose geometry, did surface matching (though not sure if that is needed for just one space), assigned space attributes including creating a new thermal zone, and ran it with ideal air loads. Everything looked fine in the Open Studio Facilities tab, so I am not sure why the surfaces are not carried over into the idf.

I had previously added a low temp radiant panel to the zone, which also resulted in an error saying that the surfaces and corresponding flow fractions were not defined within the ZoneHVAC:LowTemperatureRadiant:SurfaceGroup object. I am not sure if the first error (no surfaces in the model) caused the second (no surfaces available for surfacegroup definition), or if the second error somehow triggered something in the model that deleted all my surfaces from the idf. With the SketchUp app open in the background, I tried to create several more simple one-zone models with ideal air systems (no radiant panel), and kept getting the same no surfaces error.

However, when I finally closed out of the SketchUp app, and created a whole new model, opened up OpenStudio and ran it, everything was fine. But when I try the radiant panel again, I get the same second error from before.
