Hi

Found a weird thing with the Mortor in Airstream fraction that is input for Fans in OpenStudio. From what i understand, when the value is 0, it should not provide any heat to the airstream. But that is not the case, which made me wonder if something is wrong when it translated into the idf file.

I also noticed that there is a small difference between setting it to 1 or 0. But it still gain some heat from the fan, so is that cause by something else? The two examples are shown in the figures below:

Motor In Airstream Fraction = 0.0 image description

Motor In Airstream Fraction = 1.0 image description

Hope someone can enlighten me :)

2017-04-18 08:55:44 -0500 asked a question Set Window to Wall Ratio Measure removes window objects

Hi everyone! :)

This question is based on a previous question where i needed help with getting the shading system to work properly. I've looked into it a bit more and i found something that kinda needed a new post.

I found out that the reason why my Shading system did'nt work and why the error message statet that it was not attached to any windows, is because of the "Set Window to Wall Ratio by Facade" Measure (WWR) created by NREL.

I know that when using the measure, it removes the previous window construction and adds a new with the given sill height and WWR, which is fine but it does not add the objects that was attached to the previous window to the new window, meaning that settings such as Frame and Divider and shading control is lost in translation. An example is shown in the figure below:

image description

With WWR Measure on the left. Without WWR Measure on the right. The models are completely identical aside from the WWR measure.

This is a huge problem when trying to conduct a parametric analysis of a building where the WWR measure is used and seeing as the WWR is an very important building paramter, this really needs to be fixed.

Hope someone is able to help with this or know how to change the measure to account for attached window objects :)

2017-04-12 03:45:19 -0500 asked a question OpenStudio Shading controls not working

Hello! :D

I'm trying to get solar shading controls to work in OpenStudio and i've used the "Input Output reference" as guide. I want to model exterior blinds. The building is a two storey office building and i'm currently running with 1 thermal zone.

The problem is that the shading control have no effect on the results, it is completely ignored. I checked my warnings i found the following:

GetSurfaceData: WindowProperty:ShadingControl: "SHADING CONTROL" is not referenced by any window.

So apparently my control is not referenced by any window. But according to sketchup and OpenStudio my controls are added to the windows, so something goes wrong somewhere. (See pictures below for documentation)

The applied shading settings veiwed in OpenStudio:

Example of one of the windows showing that the shading control is indeed added:

The shading control settings in SketchUP:

So does anyone know what is wrong and is this a fixable problem? :D

2017-03-21 04:43:52 -0500 answered a question Running several models with the same sample?

Looked a bit further into the matter and it turns out that running two models with 1000 simulations each actually have the same sample, just in random orders. So all i had to to was sort the data according to one of the variables and the results become comparable.

So i guese that the server have some kind of pre-defined seed or sample generation method that is always used. If someone knows more about this, feel free to enlighten me :)

2017-03-21 02:52:35 -0500 asked a question Running several models with the same sample?

Hello

I'm running some large scale analysis with the openstudio spreadsheet and i want to compare models with 1000+ simulations each with each other, but in order to do so they need to be run using the same sample.

I'm using the Latin Hypercube sampling option and i dont see anywhere to input seeds or custom samples, so does anyone know if this is possible?

2017-03-14 05:50:33 -0500 asked a question Where to find/edit ground reflectance in OpenStudio

Hi!

Im currently working in OpenStudio and want to have lighting control using radiance. Everything works fine but i don't know where to find ground reflectans both visable and solar radiation. Does OpenStudio/E+ use some standard values that are hidden or does it just assume 0?

2017-02-20 09:30:34 -0500 asked a question Maintain constant indoor climate with CAV system and constant Inlet temperature

I'm currently writting my masters thesis and for accademic reasons i need to be able to model a single thermal zone, with heat recovery, constant airflow and constant inlet air temperature while also keeping the room temperature between 20 and 25 °C, using some room equipment such as convective heating/cooling. (this is shown in the figure)

Cooling and heating should not run at the time, as in the heating is on when the temperature is below 20 and the cooling is on when its above 25.

image description

i've tried different setups in the HVAC tab in OpenStudio but i can't seem to get it right. I did also try the IdealAirloads in OS but it just lags data such as heat recovery and fan power, which i need.

Does anyone know if this is possible in OpenStudio and if yes, how do i model the system?

2017-02-14 01:38:02 -0500 commented answer Reduce Ventilation by Percentage measure not working correctly

Thanks @David Goldwasser! But i think something went wrong, as when i download the new one from BCL it only contains the .xml file and not the ruby measure ?? :)

2017-02-13 03:45:07 -0500 asked a question Reduce Ventilation by Percentage measure not working correctly

I'm trying to use the "Reduce Ventilation By Percentage" Measure in OS (Shown below). It should be reducing the design specification for outdoor air as far as i understand.

image description

When i use it, the total energy use changes but it does that regardless of the reduction i type into the measure, even when typing in 0% reduction.

My outdoor air specification is shown below and i think this is the number that the measure should target but now im not really sure? image description

If someone can solve this, it would be very nice :)

2017-01-24 07:57:17 -0500 commented answer Changing window properties as a variable in OpenStudio Analysis Spreadsheet

I think you're right, this was also a last resort kinda thing that i had a small hope would work. It would be much better to have a measure that just alters the values of a particular construction but the problem is i can't find such measure and im not skilled enough to write one myself :)

2017-01-24 04:26:08 -0500 asked a question Changing window properties as a variable in OpenStudio Analysis Spreadsheet

I have been trying to find a way to change window properties such a U-value, SHGC and visable transmitance as a variable in the analysis spreadsheet so that i can observe the impact of different windows.

I havent been able to find a measure that can do this directly so i tried using "ReplaceExteriorWindowConstruction" instead and thought that maybe that could work, even though its a choice argument. So i renamed all me window constructions from 1-6 and added the discrete distribution from 1-6 (This is shown in the figure below):

image description

It did not work and i got the following error:

Failed with Could not set variable 'construction' of value 4 on model

If anyone knows how to work around this or where to find a better measure for the job i would be happy to hear from you :)

2017-01-09 01:55:41 -0500 asked a question Thermal Mass Output from OpenStudio or E+

I'm doing some parameter variation in OpenStudio using measures, one of them being a measure that can multiply the thermal mass of the exterior wall by a user defined number and that's all good, but I would like to know the resulting value of the thermal mass and for that I need an output of some sort or a file I can open to at least know what the baseline thermal mass is?

Is this something that is possible?

I'm currently writting my master thesis on stochastic modelling and have been using the open studio spreadsheet for the purpose but when i came back to work after the holidays, it suddenly did'nt work anymore. It worked perfectly fine before Christmas.

Since i can't attach files (need 10 points o.o) i have pasted some bits that i hope makes sense.

This one just goes on and on..

I did try to update bundler and bundle install as it says but without luck. Still get the same error. I also tried with a fresh copy from the git repository which still did not work.

@BrianLBall Thanks that worked :)

I'm now getting an error with a measure. Do you by any chance know what this means:
