I am trying to model a DOAS FCU system that delivers condition OA from the DOAS to the FCU terminal unit before it is delivered to the zone. There is an AirTerminal:SingleDuct:InletSideMixer object in OS that I think would be the valid choice of air terminals for this system, however, when I assign both this object as well as the ZoneHVAC:FourPipeFanCoil object to the same zone I end up getting the error at the bottom of this post when trying to simulate the model. It appears that OS is not connecting the InletSideMixer to the ZoneHVAC system. I have tried arranging the equipment in the OS Thermal Zone tab with the AirTerminal object before the ZoneHVAC object and vice versa, both resulting in the same error. Am I modeling this system incorrectly, or is this an oversight with the OS software? I am running OS v2.1.

2017-03-20 12:07:05 -0500 asked a question How to model regeneration desiccant wheel on DOAS

I am trying to model a regen desiccant wheel (Trane CDQ shown below) in a DOAS using openstudio. The dessicant wheel dehumidifies and reheats the supply air after the cooling coil. Has anyone been able to model this or have a workaround that they have used?

I am referring specifically to calculating the U-value of the spandrel for the proposed design.

2016-04-19 15:25:56 -0500 asked a question Which software can model a low temp VAV with PFP boxes.

Can a low temperature VAV system be modeled explicitly in any of the energy modeling softwares? The system I am trying to model tempers the SA down to 46F at the AHU cooling coil, then a parallel fan power box (variable speed ECM running continuously when the AHU is on) mixes RA with the low temp SA to about 55F before it is delivered to the space to avoid occupant comfort problems associated with dumping cold air. During cooler months the cooling coil leaving air temp would be reset to 55F in order to reduce the amount of reheat required.

I have spoke with a Trane product support and Trace cannot model the 46F LAT from the coil with 55F SA temp to the space unless I were to add 9F of duct loss, which would negate the benefit of using a low temp VAV system. Is it possible to model this in any of the other programs such as eQuest, EnergyPlus or IES?

I am trying to use the Radiance Measure in OpenStudio on a simple test case building with only two zones. I have placed 1 daylight sensor, glare sensor, and illuminance map in each zone and successfully get results when running a simulation in OpenStudio without the Radiance Measure. When I apply the Radiance Measure I get the following error:

I have referred to a similar question posted here that states an error similar to mine could be caused by having energyplus installed in a directory other than the default. I have EnergyPlus v8.4.0 installed as a standalone software on my computer in the default location and tried switching the simulation engine to this installation as shown in the image below but receive the same error. Is there something I am doing wrong? I am testing this on a simple 2 zone building for now but I will need to run this simulation for a building with 15 perimeter zones, and 5 interior zones with skylights.

2016-02-03 16:09:04 -0500 asked a question how do I determine U-factor for spandrel for LEED energy model?

The energy model input table for the LEED submission requires proposed construction assembly U-factor to be calculated in accordance with Appendix A, however spandrel is not mentioned in Appendix A. Do I just submit a U-factor based on the Aggregate R-value of the assembly with glass, air gap, and board insulation?

2016-02-02 12:29:01 -0500 asked a question central heat pump with one chiller heater

I am working on a small project that has a central heat pump with only one chiller heater module. Is it possible to model a CentralHeatPumpSystem in E+ with only one ChillerHeaterPerformance:Electric:EIR module? The Input Output Reference mentions 1 or more modules but in the Engineering Reference guide it appears that more than one module is required for heat recovery mode or simultaneous heating or cooling modes.

2016-01-25 08:29:19 -0500 marked best answer node assignment errors in E+

I am having problems simulating a CentralHeatPumpSystem in E+. I started with a model that had successfully simulated a water cooled chiller with it's associated CHW and Source loops and District heating with it's associated hot water loop. I replaced the water cooled chiller with CentralHeatPumpSystem placing the CHW and Source inlet and outlet on the same nodes as the water cooled chiller had and removed the District heating and placed the CentralHeatPump HW inlet and outlet on the same nodes the District heating had as well. While doing this the IDF editor did not allow me to select the nodes from the manager window, so I just typed them in manually as I had seen the Example Files had this problem as well. I received the following node connection errors that made my simulation fail. It appears that EnergyPlus is not recognizing the nodes for this object as it should. What could I be doing wrong?

I was able to generate a csv file of the daylighting schedules. I tried importing an IDF with the Schedule:File objects I need for each schedule with both OS and the SketchUp plugin but it appears that this type of schedule can't be imported. Any suggestions for importing schedules to OS from a csv?
