2016-05-27 12:11:57 -0500 | commented answer | Is EnergyPlus a prereq to learn OpenStudio Thank you rpg777 for your thorough answer. This is very helpful and has definitely made my decision easier. I'll look forward to get into one of the classes. Cheers! |
2016-05-26 16:30:22 -0500 | asked a question | Is EnergyPlus a prereq to learn OpenStudio I have been learning OS on my own using the youtube video tutorials but I would like to get up to speed by attending or buying a class online. I have been checking the bigladder and energy-models.com websites and I liked what I saw. I am trying to maximize my time and money but since I am a novice in BEM, I would like a recommendation as to whether I can learn OS if I take an E+ class first. Or if it is just a matter of putting more effort and just take or buy a class for OS only. Thank you kindly! |
2016-03-04 12:13:20 -0500 | commented answer | Shading created by PV array on top of roof Thank you David and Aaron for your response. I was able to do it, following your solutions and it worked great for me. |
2016-03-03 11:57:39 -0500 | asked a question | Shading created by PV array on top of roof Good morning, I was adding PV panels to my OS model in OS on the roof and I was wondering if some of you have dealt with the shading effect that this array will have on the building's roof. Is there a way to model this in OS or would the simulation will assume that some shading effect is present by way of having a "second" roof of PV panels? Will this have an impact on the total load of a building? I found this solution to modeling PV in OS -at the time (Apr/15), OS did not directly support PV- perhaps this is what I am looking for https://unmethours.com/question/4331/... does anyone has any input on this? Thank you very much! Julio |
2016-02-26 10:38:12 -0500 | commented answer | How can I run sub-hourly load analysis in single space inside a building? Thank you David and ljbrackney! I used both of your answers/comments to solve this. I used David's suggestion to "export" selected spaces because my original model had a large area that was not going to be considered for this analysis. Once I did that, I ended with three thermal zones, one of them being the clean room. Then, I just did what ljbrackney suggested and my reports and output files came out properly. Sorry I did not thank you or comment earlier, I appreciated your help! |

2016-02-07 12:49:07 -0500 | asked a question | How can I run sub-hourly load analysis in single space inside a building? Hi there! I have built a model for my building which contains a clean room space. I have been asked to generate a sub hourly or hourly load analysis for just this space. Is there a way to do this in OS? I am envisioning to go into the spaces tabs and select just the space that I need for the analysis and/or "turning off" the rest of the spaces. I am also thinking that I could generate a new sketch up envelope with the boundary conditions for this space but this approach seems kinda off. Any guidance will be highly appreciated. Many thanks! |
2015-12-28 14:40:12 -0500 | commented answer | is there a way to get data for a manufacturing facility? David, thanks again for your answer(s)! I was thinking of something similar but your answer really sticks to a better approach for modeling this type of building. I will try to get more information for equipment and schedules that I can include in my model. |
2015-12-28 14:38:17 -0500 | commented question | is there a way to get data for a manufacturing facility? Thank you for your insight David! If I were to add this component to my model in OpenStudio, should I added it in the "Load" section or "Spaces" section under the tab "Loads" for Activity Schedule (people only) ? |
2015-12-22 22:38:28 -0500 | commented question | is there a way to get data for a manufacturing facility? Hi David, I double checked it and this is a "component" with the tag occupant. Listed in the BCL as High Activity - Heavy Work, Factory Work. Thank you! |

2015-12-21 17:56:06 -0500 | asked a question | is there a way to get data for a manufacturing facility? I am learning OpenStudio and I recently started modeling a warehouse that has a medium size manufacturing space and some offices. I was not able to see the attributes for the manufacturing space in the on-demand template generators using the SketchUp plug in. I loaded the warehouse and office space attributes but could not find the same for the manufacturing space. I found the occupancy measure/component for a manufacturing facility in the BCL but I am not sure if I can add that in OS in the Facility tab for the "people definitions" button. Is there a way to model a manufacturing facility or am I doing it all wrong? Thanks a lot in advance! |
2015-11-17 11:38:36 -0500 | commented answer | What would be the main differences in outputs between Revit (BIM) vs OpenStudio (BEM) Thanks Santiago, your answer explains very well what I wanted to know. I particularly found super helpful your piece of advice about starting in Revit then move onto OS as I am a novice in this field. I kindly appreciated your time spent answering my question. |
2015-11-17 11:35:13 -0500 | commented question | What would be the main differences in outputs between Revit (BIM) vs OpenStudio (BEM) Hi Amir, yes, that's what I am asking. Thanks for rephrasing my question. I have seen the early modelling process and BIM reports done in Revit. In my opinion they seem less robust than a report for a model done in OpenStudio which I think that's what Santiago just answered this question down in his comment. In the end the comparison is tricky because of how each modelling process happens during the design of a building. |
2015-11-16 17:33:46 -0500 | asked a question | What would be the main differences in outputs between Revit (BIM) vs OpenStudio (BEM) I would like to know if comparing these two tools for obtaining energy models would give me an advantage of one over the other. I heard that architects may use Revit because of its link to autoCAD (being both an AUTODESK products). I guess, I would want to see which one is more robust in its analysis. Can these two be compared and if so, what are the advantages of using one or the other -aside from cost, since OpenStudio is free-. Thanks a bunch! |
2015-11-09 23:30:58 -0500 | commented answer | Is there a way to generate a PDF report from the beautiful OpenStudio Results Summary? Thanks Kyle and Dan! Your answer and comment gave me something to look into a bit deeper. I installed a "PDF printer" app -I have Windows 7 which by default sends print to document to XPS format- and I can share these results using the PDF format. Also, I shared the html file which as Dan said preserved all the interactive features. Thanks again! |

2015-11-06 17:52:10 -0500 | asked a question | Is there a way to generate a PDF report from the beautiful OpenStudio Results Summary? Hi there, I am new to the OpenStudio platform. I have been trying to find a way to export the OpenStudio Results Summary that contains plots, bar graphs and such. I would like to learn if there is a way where this report can be converted to a PDF or an Office document (word, power point or excel). I want to share these results with people who do not have the OS software nor the skill to run a simulation. Any insight will be highly appreciated. Thank you!! |
