Using the name "IfcOpenStudio" for the BlenderBIM Add-on
G'day! Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, as it's not a technical question, but more a legal question and I wasn't sure what the appropriate contact was and the contact page points me to this forum.
I'm a developer contributing to an open source project known as IfcOpenShell. IfcOpenShell is an umbrella of developer libraries and tools to work with IFC, the ISO data standard for building data (BIM). Utilities include things like IfcConvert, IfcClash, IfcDiff, IfcFM, and more. In general, everything uses the "Ifc" prefix.
One of the major things we build is a graphical frontend based on Blender. This is akin to how OpenStudio uses Radiance and EnergyPlus, but uses SketchUp as a frontend. Similarly, we combine the full suite of tools and use Blender as a frontend. This is currently named the BlenderBIM Add-on. We've recently been discussing a rebrand to a new name as the Blender Foundation is encouraging the community not to use the word "Blender" in their name.
One of the popular names suggested by our community is "IfcOpenStudio" - it has a lot of things going for it and has an elegant duality with IfcOpenShell (libraries) and the proposed IfcOpenStudio (combined frontend) - the only complication is that OpenStudio is already very popular software and is registered and naturally we don't want to step on any toes.
I thought it'd be worthwhile to reach out as to whether or not it is still possible to use the name "IfcOpenStudio" for our frontend platform - and if it helps that we are both open source projects working in related, but still distinct fields.
