I am trying to get hold of the heat pump model used for energyplus. Can somebody help me locate the documentation that explain the numerical or empirical model being used and how the low load performance curves. I want to try these in matlab for comparative analysis with little more control.

There is a description of the WaterHeater:HeatPump model here which may be what you're looking for. Alternatively there are a number of other links to models for various heat pumps on the Engineering Reference table of contents.

I am bit lost with the nomenclature and classifications here. A heat pump with 2 compressors, one fixed speed and other variable and connected to 2 or 3 Air handling units. Will it be under- 'Multispeed heat pump',

The engineering reference is the best place to start. When it comes down to the particulars you might want to look at the source code here. There are separate source files for the various types of heat pumps.
