Hi, I have downloaded some residential and commercial benchmark idf files. I was wondering if I can open them through openstudio directly? Or should I open them using EP-launch (although the EP-launch that came with the openstudio/energyplus folder gives an error and does not run - so in this case, should I install stand alone energyplus?) This is my first time using OS, and I havn't used Eplus in many years. Is there anything equivalent in OS like eQuest wizard to get up and running super quickly, and worry about the details later? Appreciate any pointers. -Rohini

You can import your .idf file in OpenStudio by going into file and then import. The current version of OpenStudio is bundled with EnergyPlus 8.2 but I don't know whether you will have EPLaunch as part of it or not (May be some OpenStudio expert can throw some light on this).

Here is one related post. There are a few others as well.

However, I'm not sure why they would fail to run when you launch them directly with EPLaunch. It is possible that the IDF files you downloaded were for an older version of EnergyPlus; if that is the case you need to use the EnergyPlus version translation tools to upgrade them.

Using our building type, climate zone and space type specific space types and constructions should be a good way to quick up and running quickly

Thanks. I too think that the idf I have must be an old version, since using the import function mentioned by Waseem brings up 'not valid to draft strictness'. I am now trying to figure out where to find the version translation tools.

You can use IDFVersionUpdater in PreProcess folder of EnergyPlus. That may help you in updating your files. See This.

Thanks Waseem. If anyone is looking for a direct link to find the translator for really old versions (I have version 5 idf files), use this link - http://energyplus.helpserve.com/Knowl...
