Dear all,

I want to run Radiance using OpenStudio. However, I am getting this error "failed to run ModelToRad". I have read all the answers so far and did all the steps below:

  1. Install Radiance in a nice short path (c:).
  2. Choose a very simple name without space or punctuation for the OpenStudio's file as well as its path
  3. Scan tools to find the routs to Radiance, EP and Ruby
  4. Install EP to a default directory (I suspect I did this step wrong)

Could you please explain why I am still getting this error? The model I am runing is a very simple box. I am using EP 8.2, OpenStudion 1.7, and Radiance version 5.0.a.3. I already defined an illuminace map, a lighitng control and a glare sensor.

Not sure, but the "." in your username could be causing problems. I recently had this same error that was finally traced back to a " " (a space) being in my user directory name. Once the space was removed, my error went away.

Have you added all the required objects for radiance simulation described in this post?

To kent Beason: I deleted "." in the username. Still I got the same error. To macumber: I did define glare sensor, illuminance map, and daylight control. In regard to material properties, I did define solar, thermal, and visible absorptance in EP. I am not sure if Radiance has access to this. In DIVA the user has to reassign properties to surfaces. So I am wondering if this is the case in OpenStudio. Is there any specific location to reassign Radiance properties to EP surface? Would you mind prepare a Radiance example file online? I can compare mine with that and see what I am missing.

Did you associate the primary daylight control, secondary daylight control (if any), and primary illuminance map with each thermal zone?

Yes, it is a very simple model. I uploaded a 3D image and updated the error in the Main Question. Do you think that many versions of EP installed on my computer causing a problem? Another hint to solve this issue is that EP is running well so the problem is with Radiance connecting to EP through Openstudio.

Yes, finally I run the radiance. A part of the problem was what you mentioned. Illuminance map was not assigned to the thermal zone which is very questionable because I created after I double-clicked on the zone. For some reason I do not fully understand the benefit of space in OpenStudio. It is redundant and sometimes confusing. The other problem with ModelToRad error was the connection between Radiance and Windows 7-64 bit. If you install OpenStudio, the EP comes with the package. So I knew this fact and I did not install EP 8.2 separately. However, I did get error about Radiance could not find EP. So I installed EP 8.2 separately on C drive where Radiance is. Everything works perfectly after that.

Glad this finally worked for you Sara. OpenStudio Spaces allow for grouping of multiple space types into a single thermal zone. The need to connect the illuminance map to the thermal zone comes from requirements that we be able to simulate the illuminance map in both Radiance and EnergyPlus. The need to install EnergyPlus separately from OpenStudio is a bug that we plan to fix in the next quarter.
