Applying Zone equipment to multiple zones

Hi All,

I am relatively new to OpenStudio and I am finding it pretty exciting to work with the latest version. However, I came across this slight trouble when I am trying to add zone equipment to multiple thermal zones. I am not sure if there is an easy fix to it.

I have a model with over 200 thermal zones and most of them have the same type of zone equipment. I am trying to add the zone equipment to one zone and apply it to all other zones. Every time I select an additional zone, the GUI seems to be refreshing and it is extremely time consuming to select all the zones that I would want to. Is there a quicker (and may be smarter) way to select multiple zones without having the GUI to refresh every time I select a checkbox?

Thanks in advance, Raghu

I'm not sure how many systems you have set up, but it sounds like you have very few when you say "one zone and apply it to all other zones." It sounds as though you are describing the gui within the Thermal Zones tab. Just to be sure, you've not overlooked the "All" checkbox that is to the left of Turn On Ideal Air Loads column in the Thermal Zones tab? Maybe selecting All, and deselecting ones not wanted will get you there quicker than selecting each individually.

@MatthewSteen Thank you for pointing me to the tutorial. I am using 1.7.0 and the custom column viewer made it partially quicker. The GUI still refreshes every time I select a checkbox. It worked fine for a smaller model but it is taking me a few hours with my present model just to select the zones that have zone equipment. Roughly about 30% of my thermal zones have zone equipment and hence deselecting after "select all" is almost taking the same amount of time. Although this is not stopping my work presently, I was wondering if there is a less tedious way to do it.

@rsunnam that behavior is common in large models which is why it's usually a good idea to combine spaces/zones if you can. I'm sure the development team is aware of it and is working to improve it whenever they can. Another option would be to write an OpenStudio Measure to automate the process now and in future models. If you're trying to add FanZoneExhausts or FourPipeFanCoils I can share.

@MatthewSteen, I was trying to add Water to Air HPs to my zones. I managed to get the equipment up for now! I will probably have to write a measure for future use though. Thank you for your help! It is much appreciated!

@rsunnam what version are you using, 1.7.0 or 1.7.x? You may be experiencing a small issue with the new Grid View and the Apply to Selected feature as mentioned in the Grid View Tutorial which may be useful.

@rsunnam I don't have a measure to add WSHPs to zones but there are some available on the BCL that I think apply to all zones. I do have a measure to Set WSHP Inputs in case that's helpful. It allows the user to change one or more inputs (negative values are ignored) for WSHPs based on its name. I also have a measure to Rename Zone Equipment And Components in my repository as well.

These are extremely helpful. I will try using them. Thank you for sharing!
