Using BCL OpenStudio Results SI Measure causes simulation failure
I am trying to use the OpenStudio Results Measure that is available on the BCL at https://bcl.nrel.gov/node/82918. I am trying to use this measure as it has been updated to include a choice to display results in SI units according to this thread - https://unmethours.com/question/15203/metric-reports-in-open-studio/.
I save the measure in the 'My Measures' directory but when I do so, using the measure in the GUI causes the simulation to fail. I do not know whether this is because it comes into conflict with the existing measure in the OpenStudio Application or for some other reason?
I can see when I remove the measure from the 'My Measures' directory, the symbol next to the reporting measure in the GUI changes from 'My' to 'BCL'.
When I have no measure in the 'My Measures' directory and the symbol in the GUI is 'BCL', then the simulation runs okay and the OpenStudio Results are displayed, but in Imperial Units. I do not know if this is a bug or (more likely) some kind of user error! Do I need to remove the original OpenStudio Results Measure from somewhere before I can use the OpenStudio Results measure found on the BCL?
Using OpenStudio Application 1.0 and core OpenStudio 3.0
Is this question a duplicate of https://unmethours.com/question/46424... ? Does the answer in the other question apply here or is this a separate issue?
This is kind of a new question as previously I just wanted any OpenStudio Results measure to run. Now I am able to run the Imperial units measure, just not the SI units downloaded from the BCL. The problem is the same - that the SI units OpenStudio Results measure causes the simulation to crash - I just was not aware this was the problem when writing the previous question.
I am happy to delete the previous question if you think that it makes this clearer?
@jaklloyd, the OpenStuido Results measure is automatically downloaded to your computer when you launch the OpenStudio application. While I don't know that it will cause an issue it isn't a good idea to also add a copy of that measure to your "My Measures" directory. If you want an extra copy, I would use the copy measure functionality which will result in the copy in your "My Measures' directory that will have a unique name and unique ID (which you won't see in the application but is important).
Regarding the specific error, when you say simulation fails, do you mean EnergyPlus runs with fatal error when you switch argument to SI, or does the workflow break somewhere else, for example prior to the simulation running, or in the reporting measure. Letting us know if you have an
eplusout.err
file and what is in it will help answer this.Hi David, thanks, that is interesting. Yes I thought it may have something to do with the pre-installed Results Measure interfering with the newly download SI units version of the Results Measure. What is the proper way to install/use the SI Measure that you linked to in this thread? https://unmethours.com/question/15203...
Also, I realise I may be using the wrong terminology. The E+ simulation does not fail due to a fatal error, it simply does not run at all and I therefore do not have an .err file.
When I try to run the simulation, I get the following message within the OpenStudio Application:
Initializing workflow. Processing OpenStudio Measures. Translating the OpenStudio Model to EnergyPlus. Processing EnergyPlus Measures. Failed.
There is a single measure with an SI/IP switch as an argument. There was an issue when OpeStudio 3.0 first came out with accessing arguments for reporting measure but the most current measure on BCL should work with OpenStudio 2.9 and 3.0
Regarding the failed export, try exporting your OSM with the file menu and see if it still fails and if you get specific errors messages in the export,
If I export to IDF then I can run the simulation but I do not get the OpenStudio results HTML output file. If I run the simulation in OpenStudio App it fails at the point where it is 'Processing EnergyPlus Measures' before starting the E+ simulation.
Can you confirm that pasting the downloaded measure from BCL into the 'My Measures' folder is the correct way to load the measure? Is there any step I am missing? As soon as I delete the newer measure with the SI/IP switch from the 'My Measures' folder then the previous IP units measure works fine.
@jaklloyd, thanks for posting the update that the export to IDF did not fail. Can you email the OSM file and EPW to david.goldwasser@nrel.gov and I can take a look. While it is generally true that reporting measure run after the simulation there is a small output request section that runs after forward translation to IDF but before the simulation runs, I expect that is where yours is failing for some reason.
Also I can confirm that pasting the downloaded measure from BCL into the 'My Measures' folder" is the wrong way to do it, in particular for OpenStudio results.
@DavidGoldwasser I'm very sorry for wasting your time. The real problem was that I didn't know how to properly use the measure! I couldn't see where to switch to SI units...I have found this now after rummaging in the GUI. I assumed I had the IP units measure downloaded as I couldn't find this option but actually I had the most recent measure installed already! Presumably this is the reason for the crash when there was another identical measure pasted into the 'My Measures' folder. Embarrassingly, the measure actually works fine!
