Importing and E+ model into Open Studio

asked 2015-04-19 09:40:28 -0600

updated 2020-03-08 11:35:54 -0600

We are used to using EnergyPlus and have been asked to do a project were the final model will need to be in Open Studio which we are less familiar with. It seems that some of the systems that we must model are not available in Open Studio yet and so is there a way we can import are working E+ model with these systems into Open Studio and have convert it to an OSM? Or are we going to need to do something clever in Open Studio and if so can anyone point me to some information to help with this. The more we can import into Open Studio the better as we have spreadsheets which input data quickly into an idf and would like to maintain as much of our speed advantage as possible.

Thanks in advance for help and suggestions.

In general, the ability to write OpenStudio Measures will increase speed by automating tedious tasks (lots of example ruby code on this site). I've found that OS has greatly improved in the past year or so such that most commonly encountered HVAC systems are now available in the app without having to write an EnergyPlus Measure. The place where I believe it's lacking is in the availability of custom reports (e.g. LEED) for quickly documenting results, but Reporting Measures could be written to automate that.

Great thanks, we are investigating measures now and leaning fast. I am looking forward to seeing what OS can do.

You may be able do this with measures depending on system type, but HVAC system import from IDF is not a native OpenStudio feature—it's tricky to do in general and hasn't bubbled up to the dev team's list of priorities. See this previous question: https://unmethours.com/question/2618/...

Thanks! This was a preemptive question as we haven't started this model yet, I feel some more questions will be winging there way soon once we get into the systems. Looking forward to playing around in Open Studio.
