Hi - is it possible model fan energy and the associated heat pick up with the zonehvac:IdealLoadsAirSystem?

For early design modeling purposes the IdealLoadsAirSystem is very nice as it is simple to set up and can model heat recovery and economizers. The only thing missing is a good way to approximate fan energy with the mechanical ventilation rates of the system.

Do you really need to account for fan heating in early design modeling?

Well - at least the fan energy would be important if one wants to talk about EUI and differences between mech vent with heat recovery etc. Certainly open to simpler suggestions.

There might be an easier way, but you could do this via an EMS program. Add a sensor for the ideal system airflow rate, calculate the fan power, and then actuate an ElectricEquipment object's power. The ElectricEquipment object can model both fan energy and heat gain.
