Hello,

Can someone guide me on what roughness in material stand for? I'm adding new materials and I don't know the implications of this variable in the material itself.

Thanks

I'm assuming that you're using EnergyPlus, so let me know if you're using a different tool.

The roughness input field of Material objects in EnergyPlus is used to calculate the exterior convection coefficient. For more information, review the Engineering Reference section about calculating exterior convection from this roughness input.

Hello Aaron,

Thanks for your answer, I'm using OpenStudio.

@amagro Got it. OpenStudio is an interface for EnergyPlus, so this roughness input ultimately has the same effect on the model's calculations that I described above.
