I had OpenStudio working fine already six months ago. After unknowingly pitting "load library" against OS's refactoring and trying anything I could think of yesterday, I find that the program will no longer open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times--according to directions, too! I have removed a couple lines related to OpenStudio from the registry, but all to no avail. I have also tried relocating OSM files and related folders. I don't whether to call this more a Windows problem or an OpenStudio issue.

Here's some of what shows up in Event Viewer (there is more, if that will help), though I understand none of it.

What version of windows are you using? Are you seeing the crash when you first launch the OpenStudio application, or when you load any model, or when you load specific model? Please also try the following tasks.

  1. Rename the directory named "BCL" in your user directory
  2. If you can Launch Application, Under Preferences/Change Default Libraries, choose "Restore Defaults"
  3. Restart OpenStudio Application.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by pitting load library against OS's refactoring, what do you think changed on your computer between now and when it worked?

Windows 10, 64 bit. I get the initial splash screen, but never beyond that. I tried to clean all traces of OpenStudio from even the registry. There is the main OpenStudio set of folders also on C, but if there is a folder or file named “BCL,” I’m not finding it anywhere. OpenStudio had been working fine until I tried to do what I described in the Unmethours question “openstudio load library osm problem.”

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Have you tried installing another version of OpenStudio?

FYI, you could try a program such as Revo Uninstaller, have it running while you install OpenStudio so it'll see everything that's done by the installer (including registry stuff, copying dlls etc), and then use the program to fully uninstall OpenStudio.

While I don't think it is relevant in this case, since you are not getting past the splash screen, but a 4th item to try would be to empty out your "MyMeasures" directory. If you saw the GUI with greyed out tabs, and it crashed before they became active, then this would be something to look at.

Number 5, could be to create a new user account on the computer and see if it still crashes for that user account.

After using Revo, the program went beyond the splash screen, worked quickly. Later it took 5 minutes to get beyond splash. Maybe it has always been like that; 5 minutes of splash is a long time. In all cases the message when it doesn't function is "measure manager has crashed; attempting to restart"--it never does. "MyMeasures" folder is always totally empty. After working from the book's example for some time, OpenStudio again locks up, giving the same message as above when terminated. It seems something about M Manager, which I don't use, is wrong. Revo helped-Thanks much to both of you!

This appears to have been a problem associated with FloorspaceJS on one particular computer. I suspect this because after going back to using the Sketchup plugin, I have had no similar problem on this computer in more than two months. Nonetheless both OpenStudio and FloorspaceJS always functioned without this problem on a second computer.
