Energy Plus v 9.0.1 crashes when loading shading from an external file. Is this a bug or am I missing something? I am attaching the files here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pkurk72pi5c... https://www.dropbox.com/s/doalu5uuu7m... Many thanks for your help with this issue, Tim

Question was also posted to the helpdesk, ticket 13119, repeating answer here for everyone else.

  1. Delete the first line of the shading csv file "This file contains external shading fractions for all shading surfaces of all zones."
  2. The shading schedule file must contain a full year of data, even if you do not intend to run all months. The schedule file reader does not read the date/time stamps in column 1, it simply assumes that the first row of data is 01/01 hour 1, and so on.

Thanks a lot for the answer Michael. This clarifies a lot. The "This file contains external shading fractions for all shading surfaces of all zones." is contained in the shaded fraction schedules report file generated by EP and I was assuming the output file = input file.

However, I do have two followup questions:

1) You state "a full year of data" must be present. Does this mean it has to come as 8760 hourly values regardless of timestep and shadow calculation frequency settings? Or should the file match the shaded fraction schedules report that outputs also sub-hourly time steps and only report the days calculated if shadow calculation frequency is greater than 1.

2) What about the diffuse part of the calculation. Is there a way to enter shaded fractions or view-factors between surfaces and the sky patches?

Many thanks in advance for your insights. Tim

  1. My understanding of the current implementation is that it expects 8760 hourly values.
  2. No.
