Open Studio crashes when importing DOE IDF files

I downloaded Miami model file from DOE website https://www.energycodes.gov/sites/def....

Next I used IDF Version Updater to update the file to v8.8. When I opened the updated file with IDF Editor, and did a Validity Check I got prompted for an error. The error was the ULC object, the object field was highlighted, so I choose UpperLeftCorner to fix it the error. Every time I try to import this IDF file, Open Studio crashes. It happens with other files for other US cities under the above link. Please help.

I can replicate this, I'll investigate the cause.

update on this is that Sketchup plugin also crashes when attempting to open the files

Did you know there is an actual measure (developped as part of openstudio standards, but available with your recent OpenStudio installation) to generate the DOE Prototype buildings directly in openstudio?

Thank you Julien, I dont use OS, I just want to use it to open DOE IDF prototype files and export gbXML to model in DesignBuilder

I got thrown off by the "openstudio' tag. I would suggest generating the DOE prototype from the openstudio measure, you'll have the model. Then export that to GbXML, at least you'd circumvent the crash. I do know that this is somewhat of a non-answer since I'm proposing a viable alternative but not answering your actual problem. If there is a crash happening in reverse translation (IDF to OSM), that's a bug that shouldn't happen, and we will investigate that when time allows. Feel free to open an issue on the github issue tracker for openstudio.

Thanks, I was able to export gbXML from OS measure, but still trying to figure out the reason for OS crashing, I opened an issue on github as you suggested

Thanks for reporting the issue! (see #2978)

If all you want to do is export the geometry of the DOE prototype building as a gbXML file, and then import that gbXML file into DesignBuilder, then you don't need to update the IDF version. I say that because the location of surfaces hasn't changed between versions (the DOE reference buildings are based on EnergyPlus v8.0). So, you can:

  • Import the v8.0 IDF into the OpenStudio extension for SketchUp, then export the gbXML
  • Use the openstudio standards library that @Julien Marrec mentioned to generate the DOE prototype directly in the OpenStudio application, then export the gbXML

Thanks Aaron, I can only try to work with the first method for now, as I dont work with OS measures . **When I try to import an IDF file in the same version its is posted in (V8.0), I get prompted for the following error (this is what had me go through the update to V8.8 im in the first place): The collection is INVALID at strictness level 'Draft', because of the errors: Error is in an object of type 'GlobalGeometryRules', named '', in field 0. Additional information about the error type: field-level data is of an incorrect type.

**When I try to use Sketchup OS Plugin i get this error: The IDF file so and so ....is not valid to draft strictness The collection is INVALID at strictness level 'Draft', because of the errors: Field level data error of type DataType .
