We are trying to verify our building modelling with TRNSYS multizone TYPE 56 with the models in ASHRAE140 standard like model L100A (the basic model) with TRNSYS 18 to make sure our modelling procedure is correct. However, the results from TRNSYS 18 are different to the results in ASHRAE. ASHRAE standard comes with a CD which includes verification files from TRNSYS. However, the included TRNSYS files have been generated with historic versions of TRNSYS and we couldn't open it with TRNSYS 18. has anyone tried to verify TRNSYS building modelling with this approach?

The Section 7 tests in ASHRAE Standard 140 are Class II tests used for software specific to residential modeling. TRNSYS was not used to generate any of the example results in the standard. I am unaware of TRNSYS being run for these tests in the past. TRNSYS has been run with all of the Class I tests in the standard.

For TRNSYS 18 Type 56 verification of results with ASHRAE 140, We also tried class one test (basic case 600) and had no success. Case 600 is a simple cube with 2 windows. Class one tests are using an artificial TMY data created by ASHRAE that we couldn't open them with TRNSYS weather TYPEs. So we decided to start verifying the Class 2 cases which are using weather data from known cities that we could download their TMY data from energy Plus website. ASHRAE comes with old TRNSYS files that have been used to verify ASHRAE which are not using the 3D module. Now the same question, has anyone tried validating the class 1 tests (or the basic model) with TRNSYS 18? if so Could you please share them with us?

TRNSYS 18 has been run with all of the Class I tests. The files included from ASHRAE are the files originally used to create the reference results in the standard which are a very old version of TRNSYS for the building envelope tests. The TRNSYS v18 results do not match the reference results in the standard for TRNSYS because of the myriad of changes in TRNSYS over the years since the reference results were produced.

Thanks Tim, Could you please share the ASHRAE 140 verification files of TRNSYS 18 with us? We need to see if they are close enough to the results of other programs like DOE.

I will send you the link for the input files. Remember that ASHRAE 140 is a method of test and the non-analytical tests do not have a correct answer. The example results can be used to compare with results of certain versions of certain software, but they do not provide a correct answer.
