ASHRAE RP-1651 versus AEDG 50% Hospital Benchmark

asked 2017-09-28 14:20:31 -0600

updated 2017-10-02 08:11:13 -0600

It has been by chance that I looked at both the RP-1651 and the AEDG report for hospitals to find out that baseline models being used in two studies are different for hospitals. That being said, I am looking at a Zone 2B hospital and the EUI make up is completely different in these two studies, largely due to different massings used I believe!

Does anyone know where I can find the data/idf files behind the Advanced Energy Design Guides and how/why these massings are different than DOE Benchmark models?

I am talking about 120 versus 250 EUI!

@Amir Rezaei you can find the TSD for the AEDG 50% guides including hospital here.. I can't speak specifically to hospital, but I do know that for K-12 there were some changes made from the prototype baseline to the AEDG baseline, not related to performance but to building makeup and operation. Specifically an art room was added that isn't in the prototype, and schedules were updated based on feedback from AEG panel.

Thanks @David Goldwasser. I am specifically looking for the source idfs to dig into the differences. DOE does a great job of publishing all the idfs and a sheet for the benchmark models that summarizes all the inputs but I haven't found that for the AED guides. The pdfs are OK but don't give me the background info I am hoping to access.

@Amir Rezaei Just out of curiosity, how does adding Eff Office Eqp reduce heating energy as shown in the RP 1615 Hospitals_Cleaned figure?

@rraustad that is a great question and I noticed it too but that came directly out of the published data and I can't speak much to it...

According to the ASHRAE AEDG page, under "Resources" you will find a link that will take you to the BCL:

Energy Models

EnergyPlus input files are now available for the 50% Advanced Energy Design Guides from the Department of Energy EERE Commercial Building Resource Database. The information in the models has also been incorporated into the Open Source Building Component Library (BCL) on the NREL website.
