I am aware that CityGML is widely used in Europe for modeling. What is the situation in the U.S.? CityGML not so good to be used with the resources in the U.S.? Any other comments on tools like Simstadt and INSEL?

Berkeley Lab has an internal project called CityBES that uses CityGML. You can contact the leads for additional information.

The solution we're presently developing uses GeoJSON instead of CityGML. This paper describes some of the team's considerations in choosing one over the other.
