I know that SketchUp Make cannot import .dwg files. I am wondering how users are able to use SketchUp Make for creating building model geometry in OpenStudio?

The option to import dwg/dxf files is available only in SketchupPro (you have to buy it). More details here: link text

Other paths that don't require DWG/DXF import are to draw from scratch in SkechUp, import a raster image to trace, or import gbXML, IDF, or OSM from another tool.
